Tottenham are set to seal the signing of Dutch star Edgar Davids from Internazionale.

The 32-year-old has fallen out of favour with Inter coach Roberto Mancini and the Nerazzurri have agreed to release him on a free transfer.

Spurs coach Martin Jol is delighted to be on the cusp of landing his fellow countryman.

"He is one of the most versatile midfielders, a playmaker, a ball-winner with great stamina and huge charisma and one of the best midfielders to come out of Holland in the last 10 years," said Jol.

"This is a player who went to Barcelona when they were middle of the league and took them close to winning the title.

"It's terrific that he is joining us. This is the player we have spoken about who will lift the team's performance. We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and I believe Edgar will come in and lead by example."

Davids, who has 70 Dutch caps to his name, is anxious to secure first team football in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

The Surinam-born star will arrive in England in the next 24 hours to finalise personal terms and undergo a routine medical at White Hart Lane.

England will be the fourth country Davids has played in his illustrious career after spells in Holland with Ajax, Italy with Juventus, Inter and Milan, and Spain with Barcelona.

Both Everton and Middlesbrough had shown an interest in Davids earlier in the summer, but the lure of London looks to have won the day.

He wasn't 32 at the time, to be fair.
