ozleicester Posted 12 April 2013 Posted 12 April 2013 Hiya if some one has the time can you help please? Im visiting the US (CA, AZ, NV) in September, i would love to catch a game of American Football (Grid Iron, not soccer). But im doing a lot of driving... Im trying to work out who might be playing while im there, but not sure on which teams (NFL or College) are in which leagues, so i cant figure out the schedules for them. be in San Fran - 1st - 5th - any nfl or college games then? be in LA from the 15th - 18th - any nfl or college games then? If i cant get NFL or College.. is high school worth it?...really only going for the atmosphere/experience. Which stadiums or places are the best...will i actually be able to get single game tickets? Thanks for your help
Monk Posted 12 April 2013 Posted 12 April 2013 The NFL season starts at the beginning of September each year so the fixture may not be out yet. Sounds like a good trip - give me a shout/pm if you want any tips on San Fran, been there many times

Thanks for your help There are loads of football teams out west, so you should actually have no trouble at least finding one game to go to. The NFL season doesn't start until the weekend after you leave SF but you may be able to go to a preseason game. College football starts a week or so before the NFL. I'd say it would be harder and more expensice to get a ticket for, say, the San Francisco 49ers than the San Diego Chargers. As for college football, generally speaking the big schools/teams by region are: Bay Area/Northern California: Stanford Cal (at Berkeley) San Jose St. Fresno St. SoCal: USC UCLA San Diego St There are also Nevada, UNLV (stadium is on the edge of Las Vegas), Arizona and Arizona St. Along with those D-1 Football Bowl Series teams, there are other D-1 Football Championship teams, lower division teams, and junior colleges. The standard of play in the PAC-12 Conference and the Mountain West is generally very good, particularly in the PAC-12, which is historically one of the nation's strongest conferences. The 2013 NFL schedule has not been released yet but the college schedules are out, so you could check those and start thinking about what games might be worth your while.

Brilliant, thanks for your help. Are any of the colleges particualrly worthwhile... in terms of atmosphere, marching bands stadiums etc?

As a Bay area resident I would recommend The Cal Bears at Berkeley. It's a nice stadium albeit a bit basic situated in a wooded area. Nice atmosphere- marching bands and a student section but not too rowdy just right really. You probably won't have much trouble getting tickets unless their playing Stamford either. Berkeley is a nice college town just outside oakland on the East Bay dead easy to get to by car or train.

There's a big university there, so you might be able to take in a game at the Lumberjack stadium try this http://www.nauathletics.com/landing/index
