Queen Beatrix abdicates: is Charles hoping it's an example?

One of my biggest clients is Dutch, and I couldn't understand why they were all on holiday yesterday and today. Turns out it's a public holiday: the whole nation is celebrating because Queen Beatrix - who's been on the throne for over 30 years - is abdicating today in favour of her son, Willem-Alexander: http://www.bbc.co.uk...europe-22348160

Apparently it is a fairly long-standing tradition in the Netherlands, but you have to wonder how Prince Charles feels. I've read somewhere that the Queen is determined to live forever because she doesn't want him on the throne, but even if that's not true, you must wonder how he feels. He's spent his whole life being trained for a job that he will only get when he's in his dotage (if he gets it at all) and then people will argue that he should abdicate in favour of his more popular son and daughter-in-law. It must be like being a City fan: a lifetime of bitter disappointment and unfulfilled expectations. Am I alone in feeling sympathy for the poor sod?

Yes I must say I feel a bit of sympathy towards Charles. He seems to have spent his whole life rehearsing for a role he’ll never play.

In saying that he’s shagged some lovely ladies in his time, trotted the world etc and if push came to shove, I think I’d take his life over mine and about 99% of the population .

I think I’d be inclined to say stuff the job , dump Chameleon , and go and live a carefree life in some tropical setting surrounded by nubiles . I’m sure he can afford it now.

He just has to be careful he stays indoors when they get those strong winds in those sorts of places.

I'd be inclined to do the same. The problem is, the poor bastard isn't equipped to take himself off and live a carefree life: if rumours are correct, he can't even put toothpaste on a brush.

The queen should have stepped down a while ago.

Thoguht she was sure to do it at the end of her jubilee last year, especially with her husband so unwell.
