Rincewind Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 Just been on the phone to Amazon about my Kindle. it's not covered under the guarantee (I am too hones but they would have found out I'm sure) They said I can have a replacement at a reduced price. Also showed me how to download the Kindle app. Got the books I ordered from Kindle but not the ones I transferred from my other laptop 3 of the downloaded books I had not ordered which brings me to the title of the thread which was one and I think you will like this one. Hercules and the Wagoner A CARTER was driving a wagon along a country lane, when the wheels sank down deep into a rut. The rustic driver, stupefied and aghast, stood looking at the wagon, and did nothing but utter loud cries to Hercules to come and help him. Hercules, it is said, appeared and thus addressed him: “Put your shoulders to the wheels, my man. Goad on your bullocks, and never more pray to me for help, until you have done your best to help yourself, or depend upon it you will henceforth pray in vain.†Self-help is the best help.Translated by George Fyler Townsend. Aesop's Fables (p. 17). Amazon Digital Services, Inc.. I think this is apt too. Sort of balances it. The Wolf and the Lamb A WOLF, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold, resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the Lamb the Wolf’s right to eat him. He thus addressed him: “Sirrah, last year you grossly insulted me.†“Indeed,†bleated the Lamb in a mournful tone of voice, “I was not then born.†Then said the Wolf, “You feed in my pasture.†“No, good sir,†replied the Lamb, “I have not yet tasted grass.†Again said the Wolf, “You drink of my well.†“No,†exclaimed the Lamb, “I never yet drank water, for as yet my mother’s milk is both food and drink to me.†Upon which the Wolf seized him and ate him up, saying, “Well! I won’t remain supperless, even though you refute every one of my imputations.†The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.Translated by George Fyler Townsend. Aesop's Fables (p. 15). Parafox Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 I used to like Aesop's Fables when I was a kid. The Dog in the Manger and the Sour Grapes are ones which i particularly remember. Ask your average kid today what Aesop's Fable they know and imagine the reply you'd get My wife has just damaged her Kindle (oo-er, missus). She had heard somehwere that they would supply a refurbished one free but it seems this is a myth.
Rincewind Posted 28 August 2013 Author Posted 28 August 2013 They have sent me a list of 'deals' I can get a better one for around the same price mine cost. Touch fire I think. I have Calibre on the damaged laptop. If that can be saved its a reasonable size and i can also put the Kindle app on. That is free and can be downloaded to an Ipad I think. So could I sell the damage one for parts on Ebau? if I get an Android or Ipad? Just one idea. A lot of myths and Legends are a kind of fable. There are often a moral to them which is where I believe religion started. The Greeks and Romans had hundreds of Gods and all had a purpose.

Rincewind Posted 28 August 2013 Author Posted 28 August 2013 Ipads are relatively heavy and hard to read outside. So might be an Android then. I asked someone yesterday who has one. I don't know how he works the keypad as he does. Small keyboard yet he zooms over it. not good for one finger typing.
MooseBreath Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 "never more pray to me for help, until you have done your best to help yourself" Indeed, should be required reading for all handout takers, that.

I went for some handouts the other day and officer said to me "Goad on your Bullocks !" At least i think that's what he said .
