nickm Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 I remember us winning the charity shield in the early seventies at filbert street and seeing stevie whitworh score the winner-anyone else remember this?
willie-bell-in-rothley Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 Yes i was there , who could forget Whitworth score his one and only................
John Munday Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 I was there. Great crowd, a Whitworth goal and a trophy. Great day
ChrisJager Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 I was there too. Great for us actually to win something. For the benefit of those wondering what we were doing contesting the Charity Shield, it was 1971 and Arsenal had just won the League and Cup double, but for some reason didn't want to take part. I think there was a bigger pay day somewhere else. Liverpool were beaten finalists, and we had just won the Second Division. They presumably didn't think it worth using Wembley for a downgraded event, so Filbert Street it was. We must be the only club to have won the Charity Shield but never won the League or Cup.
fuchsntf Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 Yep, remember it well, plus another city stalwart Ali Brown who had a good day. A great subject on a football quiz.I did one in '82' in a brit pub in germany great question to get 1st up.

The Charity Shield wasn't held at Wembley until 1974. Before then, one of the finalists would usually host the game.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 12 February 2014 Posted 12 February 2014 I remember the goal well. Happy days.
