Beliall Posted 9 April 2014 Posted 9 April 2014 red sox vs rangers, ross is having a mare on the mound
Fox in the North Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 I'm not very clued up on Baseball at all, but I want to get into it. Apart from the obvious ones, who are the decent teams? Just thinking I might follow one for the year! (no glory hunting).
Jordan Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 Tough loss for the Yanks today--Baltimore takes 2 of 3 in the Bronx before the Sawx come to town for a 4-game set. The AL East is going to be total carnage once again. I'm not very clued up on Baseball at all, but I want to get into it. Apart from the obvious ones, who are the decent teams? Just thinking I might follow one for the year! (no glory hunting). If you want to know which teams the pundits think will be there or thereabouts this season, this is a decent list of predictions via ESPN. For an alternative, advanced metrics-based prediction, here's what Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA system says. As for what team to support: well, I'm a Yankees fan, so support us because we're the underdog this season Seriously, though, since there is so much history in baseball, and because teams' success often mirrors the fortunes of their cities, I think the identities of Major League clubs are more enduring than they are for other teams in other sports. For example, the Yankees are royalty, the Pirates and Royals are ne'er-do-wells, the Mets are the red-headed stepchildren, the Cubs are the "lovable losers," the Cardinals are consistent, Dodgers fans "show up in the 3rd inning and leave in the 6th," the Twins are the inoffensive northerners... and so on. If there's a particular personality trait that either describes you, or a trait that you really like in a sports team, you can probably find a match for that in the Major Leagues. If there's a particular city or state in the USA that you have an affinity for, then go for their team. Since there is no "salary cap" in baseball like there is in the other 3 "Big Four" sports, the teams from large TV markets tend to succeed while teams from smaller cities usually have a lot less luck, though, which is something to keep in mind. Also, if you like a baseball-themed film, that could give you an idea (ex. "Major League" series = Indians, "Moneyball" = A's, "Fever Pitch" = Red Sox, "The Scout" or the Seinfeld sitcom = Yankees).
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 My Reds have had a shocking start to the season. Defensively we have been pretty good except for Homer Bailey (Appropriate name at the moment). Bats have slowed started getting a few hits last 2 months.

Just thinking I might follow one for the year! (no glory hunting). I've been a Baltimore Orioles fan since the 1980s, when my company had an office there. They are ideal for me, because they're a bit like City. In those days they had a crumbling old stadium (though I loved it), absolutely passionate fans and iconic players like Cal Ripken Jr who played an all-time record 2,632 consecutive games for the Os. They moved to a new stadium in the early 1990s and, like City, had a brush with bankruptcy not long afterwards. Mind you, they've not won anything since 1969, although they got to their division playoffs in 2012. The difficult thing to get your head round in baseball is how a game can all turn on a single player, such as a pitcher having a purple patch to stop anyone scoring, or a hitter smacking a home run when all of the bases are loaded - ie, there is a player on first, second and third bases - so that one hit is worth four runs. I saw that once, against the Detroit Tigers, and it's something you talk about for weeks afterwards - bit like Knocky's goal against Florist last year.

Just thinking I might follow one for the year! (no glory hunting). i was in the same position last year, i watched lots of baseball, all the teams that were on tv and looked online for advice, i narrowed it down to eastern teams, because of the higher chance of watching a team live in the uk, and as their beards grew, so i grew to like the red sox, culminating in their defeat at the yankees, brilliant rivalry, great atmosphere at the wonderful old stadium with bags of history, it didnt hurt that they won the world series either! watch lots of baseball and let the team choose you
Samu Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 I've been following the Red Sox since my first ever baseball game back in 2001 at Fenway Park. Since then I've seen the Rolling Stones play on the opening night of their world tour at Fenway in 2005, as well as getting the chance to meet John Henry and Tom Werner for a business meeting in the stadium in 2011. They gave us a private tour of the stadium afterwards and free tickets to the game in the evening. Finally I was lucky enough to meet Kevin Youkilis shooting a music video outside the stadium in 2010! I love the Red Sox!

Jordan Posted 15 April 2014 Posted 15 April 2014 Good job by the Yanks taking 3 of 4 against Boston in the Bronx last week.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 April 2014 Posted 17 April 2014 Votto is starting to get hot, we still have an appauling record.
Jordan Posted 17 April 2014 Posted 17 April 2014 Johnny Cueto was lights out today, though. P.S.: TANAKA TIME!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 April 2014 Posted 17 April 2014 Johnny Cueto was lights out today, though. P.S.: TANAKA TIME! He has been good all season but our offense hasn't been getting him the results he deserves. Today he was even better. Hoping Billy the kid can finally start getting on base more cos boy can he run.
Beliall Posted 24 April 2014 Author Posted 24 April 2014 pineda, help me understand this please. farrell doesnt mond cheating as long as you hide it better? and everyone agrees?
Jordan Posted 24 April 2014 Posted 24 April 2014 pineda, help me understand this please. farrell doesnt mond cheating as long as you hide it better? and everyone agrees? Farrell is liberal about pitchers using a foreign substance (in this case, pine tar, which batters use to help their grip on the bat) because he and a few others would prefer pitchers to have a better grip on the ball. In cooler weather, pitchers sometimes have more difficulty getting a good grip on the ball. I think most managers don't mind because they would prefer pitchers to have control on the ball and don't want to see their batters get drilled in the head by a wild 90 mph fastball. Also, this practice is more widespread than the media reports, so managers don't call each other out so their own pitchers don't get busted. Farrell has had two pitchers (Lester and Buchholz) accused of doing similar things, and opposing managers left that alone, and Farrell didn't make a big deal about when Pineda looked like he was using a foreign substance when he laced faced the Sox... This is kind of a tacit agreement amongs managers, so as long as the pitcher is discreet about it.Now, when a pitcher has been caught on camera with pine tar on his arm, when he has been warned by Major League Baseball that he would be watched carefully about doing this and would face suspension if he were caught, when he does this in such a blatant manner when he should know every television camera would be focused on him, when he does it against THE SAME TEAM he did it against recently, well, that's just plain stupid. I have no problem with Farrell's attitude about pitchers using pine tar, and I also have no problem with Farrell asking the umps to check Pineda when our pitcher had an obvious line of brown goo on his neck. Farrell really had no choice here. The original spirit of the no-foreign-substance rule is to prevent "spitballs" and "doctoring" the ball, which is similar to ball tampering in cricket. The only allowed "foreign substance" for pitchers is rosin, which the league provides on every pitcher's mound. As far as I'm concerned, Pineda is a moron and so is anybody on the team that knew he had shit all over his neck and let him go out to pitch (if anybody knew). Pineda might be feeling a lot of pressure to do well because he has missed the past two seasons with injury problems, but for Christ's sake, either suck it up or at least learn how to be a little less obvious about using pine tar! Now, the Yankees have just used 4 relief pitchers in a game during a series with their biggest rivals, and will have to find a new starter for at least Pineda's next turn in the rotation (probably his next 2 or 3 scheduled starts)--this after another starter (Ivan Nova) just got injured and is out for the season. Way to go, PINEda!
Beliall Posted 24 April 2014 Author Posted 24 April 2014 Thanks for the insight jordan. I understand it much better now.
Jordan Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox for breaking their 10-game losing streak today! I know this shouldn't mean much to a franchise and a fan base that are used to, shall we say, long losing streaks, but good job getting that monkey off your backs!

Jordan Posted 1 June 2014 Posted 1 June 2014 Joke's on me now--the Sawx have only gone and won six straight since! Their weekend series with the Rays has been nasty. The benches cleared Friday and Saturday... Let's see if they can make it 3 for 3.
Beliall Posted 1 June 2014 Author Posted 1 June 2014 Havent paid my bt sports. need to find some money. Im missing the games! Keeping track via at bat is shit.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Loving the last 2 months of baseball, 26 - 13 and now in contention for the NL Central. Pitching staff is continuing to be good Broxton and Chappy been lights out and offense whilst still missing Votto is working better. Big few series coming up after the All Star break could be the difference.
