I already work closely with a local politician in Glenfield so I'm loyal to him first and foremost.

It is something I'd love to do mind but unfortunately as Facecloth has alluded to, were I ever to stand any chance of being elected anywhere the press would have a field day bringing out comments I've made via social media etc

Politics inn twenty years time will be a game for people who have never used the Internet, the history of everything you have said is there.

They lost 309 seats. Do you remember when they used to be important in local government ? Their time in government has been a disaster and the public will and are making them pay for it.

Great shame that politics has become like that: all main parties dominated by plastic greasy-pole careerists with little experience of life beyond their political careers, little "hinterland" (as Healey put it - i.e. few interests outside politics) and little personality.

 

I wonder whether the main parties are shooting themselves in the foot unnecessarily?  I'm sure that I'm just one of many who warms more to politicians, regardless of party, who speak openly about their beliefs rather than in party-line cliches and soundbites, and who have something a bit interesting about them personally. Farage and UKIP are a prime example of that. I can't imagine that UKIP would be polling anywhere like as well if they were led by a dullard (e.g. Roger Helmer). Provided it isn't something completely beyond the pale, I reckon Joe Public is broad-minded enough to tolerate a few skeletons in closets or instances of erratic conduct, if politicians speak more openly and have a bit more personality. As I recall, Prescott's popularity ratings actually went up after he punched that bloke who through an egg in his face during the election campaign!  

 

I do like the sound of "Politics Inn", though, Matt. I'd gladly sit at the bar there in 20 years time, supping pints of bitter with Farage, you or whoever else wanted a drink and an argument!

agree with this. I despise Prescott's politics but i liked him, he was an actual human being not a shell filled with nothing but other people's thoughts and opinions like call me Dave and red Ed.

like you say some of UKIP's popularity comes from the fact that Farage is an actual human being who people are able to relate to. The rest I think comes from people being justifiably angry at the status quo, but a lot aren't really 100% sure what aspect they are angry about. They're like our equivalent of the tea party.

I worked with West Indians who could not stand the thought of being overun by 'Asians' and would support UKIP for that reason alone. One was born here and the other came to the UK in the early 60's and married an English girl. They still supported the West Indies cricket team though whilst regarding themselves as British in most other ways.

Did they? Can you provide some evidence so my ignorance can be shown?

As far as I'm aware the BNP was the follow on from the NF and they had barred all non white membership from the party.

The vast majority of people and politicians don't regard UKIP as racist, they pretty much exclusively regarded the NF and BNP as such, maybe that's something you should think about.

It's only these peculiar far left groups that regard UKIP as such and they should be treated with the contempt they deserve.

That would be a strange reason to vote UKIP then given they intend to make it easier for a skilled Asian to come to Britain but harder for a white European too.
