The guardians showed that, and I think showed most lab gains bring from the cons, UKIP gained off the lib dems in the main.

If boundaries are set up to favour one party then that is not on. If it happens like that organically then it's just a quirk of FPTP. It's happened organically - and it's not fair, even though I'm glad of the current bias, as a lefty. 20 or 30 years ago, it was the other way round. It just happens due to population movements - recently, mainly a growth in the numbers of people living in naturally Tory constituencies in the SE and a decline in the numbers living in deindustrialised parts of the north, so Labour constituencies now tend to have fewer people living in them. The Govt was intending to change the boundaries to adjust for this, but the Lib Dems vetoed it in revenge for something that the Tories had refused to do (can't remember what - can anyone remind me?). I echo ADK's comment about First Past The Post. If we had a more proportional electoral system - such as single-transferable votes in multi-member constituencies (similar to the Euro elections, but with the chance for your vote to be transferred to 2nd, 3rd choices etc once your 1st choice was eliminated) - then it'd be a lot fairer. There'd be a number of UKIP and Green MPs in parliament, for a start. On another note, good to see the Greens gaining quite a number of council seats, well up on last time, though nothing like the UKIP upsurge. If Dangerous Tigger was proud to have voted UKIP, I'm proud to have voted Green....but haven't got a flag at hand to wave! I hope that the Greens at least hang on to their 2 MEPs tomorrow; they could even add a couple more, depending on vagaries of the voting system (if they get 10%+ in a few regions and one of Con, Lab or UKIP gets less than 20%, they could be quids in).

Rincewind Posted 25 May 2014 Posted 25 May 2014 I was always in favour of PR which is one of yhe main reasons I liked the Lib Dems but since they went bed with the Tories and Labour do not speak up for the ones that need them I have turned a little Green. Appropriate as that is the colour a lot of politicians make me turn when they open their mouths.

Not really a good night for anyone, Labour clearly aren't heading for government now which is great and the Liberals have what their perverted little minds deserved. The UKIP manifesto now is huge, they will be going from a supposed single issue party to having every policy scrutinised in detail by the press, let's hope they do the business. Politics in Britain needs a huge shake up. You have to laugh at the Labour voters still shouting racist, Farage hasn't bombed and killed hundreds of thousands of brown people.
