  1. ...is anyone really surprised by all of this? They shouldn't be. The bombastic nationalist self-interest is the point.
  2. And this is just one example of truth of an important event being subverted by those who would seek sadistic power over others. It has dire consequences for the future of both democratic systems and human civilisation itself, if it is not addressed. And soon.
  3. On the general topic, folks in the West tend to give Modi much more of a pass than other comparable leaders despite him doing regularly heinous things. Perhaps it's an Anglosphere thing?
  4. Kissinger made it to the ton as well.
  5. For now. That won't last.
  6. The descent down the alt-right rabbithole is getting rather excessive now: It would be darkly hilarious if this man didn't have the money and therefore influence to back political leaders who would then implement these perverted idea of "values" on everyone else.
  7. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/c3rqgwxwl2yo Oh, and look, seems like a President can be confirmed ceremonially without a riot/insurrection attempt to install the other candidate as victor. Who knew?
  8. Not sure, when the consequences of that mindset become fully apparent, those left behind screaming "who killed the world?" while looking for those responsible for it will buy that line in magnanimity, tbh.
  9. It is a bit of both. And the laws of physics tend not to entertain either for very long. Which is frustrating, seeing as a species we are aware of this and could do enough about it. NB. TBH if people's tunnel vision on the matter just endangered themselves, then it would be fair enough - personal responsibility/freedom and all that. But it doesn't just endanger themselves.
  10. Well, that's entirely stable.
  11. The UK could stop building houses everywhere tomorrow, and it wouldn't stop, or barely even slow, the increasing damage that these events will continue to cause now and in the future.
  12. Pretty much, yes. Poor infrastructure planning for new builds, lack of long term thought, and not accounting for changes in weather habits that have been patently obvious to predict for a long time.
  13. Bringing this back to the fore.
  14. Personally, I just draw the line at those who at least make an effort to show empathy for those out of their line of sight spatially and temporally and those that don't. And the reasons for that are obvious.
  15. And therein lies the issue of short-sighted, adversarial thinking on the part of governmental parties. No long term infrastructure projects that go well, no preparation for the challenges that the Earth can and will throw at us. That being said, in a democracy I would say mostly the populace gets the government it deserves.
  16. There's something in that, more's the pity. I would posit that social media has played a large part in that breakage, too.
  17. It shows how ill prepared everyone is, despite the scientific community predicting it pretty much to the crossed T for the last few decades.
  18. I'm curious: is this the kind of straightforward banning which infers political bias from the mod team, or a more informal, not quite defined type?
  19. @Bilo has given the right answer to that conundrum above. They've always had old media, and now they seem more and more adept at their grip on new media, too.
  20. The bolded, and fact that they are still doggo, in fact even more so, is reason enough for me tbh. I can see why someone would think otherwise, though.
  21. Considering both the alternatives and that they've had less than a year to work, I'm inclined to give them more time for the moment. NB. Especially when the philosophy one of the alternatives is so short sighted it will screw over the vast majority of people alive right now on a timetable within their own lifetimes.
  22. Which, I imagine, leads to a tricky situation when the administration running that nation exhort self interest, subservience and conflict, rather than any form of friendship.
  23. You'd think an election and change of government isn't very far behind. Let's hope that if it is (as seems near certain) the Conservative one, that they're not too keen about getting into bed with the next incumbent south of the border.
  24. It's a combination of climate change causing more extreme weather conditions, and also very poor planning decisions for house building along with implemented infrastructure not being able to deal with those conditions.
  25. That's entirely plausible. It's just a shame that way of thought will lead to a truly monstrous toll of death and suffering for which they will be blamed.
