Only happened a few years ago after some people kicked off that second place wasn't acknowledged. Effectively, you could come 6th and lift a trophy for winning the play-offs, but get nothing for achieving automatic promotion.

No. The gap between first and second is irrelevant. The gap to third is the important thing. Winning the league would be nice, but finishing in the top 2 is vital.

Because you want to make the gap as big as possible between both of them. Leeds dropping points would be beneficial to us. Let's secure top 2 and worry about coming first afterwards. Winning the league has literally no extra benefits over coming second.
