Predictable but still shit.

I thought the result was a little overhyped although the championship implications make it more impactful. The cars that chose to stay out finished on the podium. Was surprised so many pitted when you almost always get a red flag these days when there's heavy rain.

I still haven't heard a good reason why Harris will win. I'd like that to be the case but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I agree that Trump will want a legacy. I expect some kind of space milestone. Most people think he'll want some kind of foreign policy win too. I don't know what his domestic goals will be if any.
-
I struggle to see how Kamala Harris wins the election. Biden only narrowly won last time out. I've heard anecdotal evidence that people are switching to Trump in small numbers citing economic concerns and small numbers on the left are planning to protest by either not voting or voting for a no hoper. I haven't heard a single person say they are switching to Dem based on Trump's legal issues. This would be enough to reverse the Dem gains last time out and deliver a similar result to 2016. Would be interested in why there would be a different outcome.

It reminds me of the Brexit referendum really. The thick, the bigoted and the well off sociopaths vs the rest. The difference is that the US is actually a superpower so while it's bad for us and the world if they adopt an America First outlook it might benefit more Americans relative to the idiocy that was Brexit.
-
What exactly are the reasons people have to vote for Donald Trump?
-
I keep flip flopping on this if I'm honest because it's easy to read the US as in decline due to foreign policy outcomes and economically losing out to China over time. I have US friends who are adamant the country is on the brink of irrelevance and the comparisons to the Roman Empire are made. Actually I don't really know but I think as I get older I crave stability a bit more and definitely find myself less concerned with moral purity when it comes to geopolitics. A strong America is better than one where rogue states and authoritarian regimes hostile to our values are allowed to dominate.
-
America is the original source of the culture wars, has a stupid electoral system and unfortunately has an impact on us. (plus I have family in the US). Trump should be nowhere near the white house. His enduring popularity speaks to the state of the American electorate. Just like us they are an empire in decline. The question is who will replace them and what impact that will have on our way of life.

Life sentence, minimum 20 years before being considered for release by parole is quite a harsh sentence although I don't really want to see him released. How do you rehabilitate such a malignant sociopath? He was clearly completely addicted to this sadistic behaviour. I just feel sad that there are apparently at least 3500 victims. Then you've got the knock on impact on relatives etc.

Social conditions were way better for boomers than they were for me. Would happily trade the 'luxury' of modern consumerism for the job and housing market my dad had available to him. As someone who would just like the chance to earn a living, own a house and maybe raise a family the boomers were the most privileged generation. Would honestly prefer to cycle to work (my dad didn't but my grandfather did). You could actually do that without being mown down by a boomer in a rangerover heading to collect his rent. Just sounds like better times. Less management culture too. Could have a cheeky beer during lunch break. No psycho babble wank about 'mindfulness'. We were actually British and had our own language and culture separate from America. Modern Britain is just total shit really. Absolutely soulless society. Even football is crap. Can't stand at the football. Can't have a drink. You need to buy a membership to then have a chance to maybe buy a ticket. Boomers could turn up on the day, pay and stand on a terrace. I don't hate boomers, but many of them seem to think they fought in WW2 (they didn't) and that they had it really hard (they didn't). It's always been popular boomer vote fodder to call young people stupid lazy and entitled so I don't feel that much sympathy. Not really sure anything justifies the name calling either.

Mostly his consistent pace and racecraft. I'm just not sure who else is ahead of him. You could argue Leclerc and I wouldn't really see that as too controversial. You could also probably argue Sainz but I think that's a stretch. Hamilton right now is not performing consistently. Russel is just objectively worse. Less consistent and his mistakes tend to be bigger. Perez definitely not. Piastri is consistently a bit slower with the occasional better race. I can understand people thinking Piastri has the higher ceiling but he's not better right now. There's nobody in the midfield that's doing well enough to be considered. Diehard Alonso fans might try and argue for him but I don't think so. Not sure the starts are as bad as people make out. Texas has a habit of P2 being the better grid slot because you get the inside into t1. He's had a few genuinely bad starts and now casual fans have decided that's his thing. I think being consistent and having pace is the most important thing in F1 followed by racecraft. He's got good car control too. Able to drive these cars on the limit. Something Hamilton just can't.
-
Why do so many people not rate Lando Norris? Feels like he gets a lot of stick as though a better driver would have walked the title. I thought he slightly edged Sainz, put Ricardo into decline and has so far been better than Piastri. It's like people forget Verstappen is meant to be the generational talent, already has 3 titles and a team that centres him and is procedurally better than Macca. For me he's the 2nd best driver behind Max with Leclerc 3rd. Will be interesting next year where the cars end up performance wise. Hamilton is a bit of a wildcard. I feel like he's more likely to be a flop than a success at Ferrari because he just doesn't like these heavy cars and a new team and good teammate plus his age will all be against him.

When it comes to the verdict the only experts are the jury. They said not guilty. I'm not questioning the verdict. I'm talking about people who understand the workings of the CPS and the procedures involved when I say experts. Not experts on firearms. Something doesn't add up. Either it was more controversial than some seem to think or it shouldn't have gone to trial. The CPS aren't supposed to charge unless there's a reasonable prospect of a conviction. So I hope that side of things is properly investigated. Obviously if a police officer was put on trial for murder to appease a mob then that is abhorrent. As far as I know the police have to follow the same legal framework as the rest of us when it comes to use of lethal force. That they must have a reasonable belief that there is a threat to their life or another person. So when it comes to a potential murder charge where it's not in dispute that lethal force was used and that it was a deliberate act it comes down to whether the threshold was met. (I wouldn't call myself an expert though) There are actually good reasons for both 'sides' to want reform around this. Serving police officers would like protection from being put on trial for murder for performing their duty. Members of the public, in particular those with traumatic history with policing would like some transparency and something better than a police officer's subjective opinion. I reckon most people aren't comfortable with this being a murder charge because it doesn't conform to how we imagine 'murder'. This man was being persued by armed police because he was the suspect of violent crime involving firearms. So his likely criminal offending was the prime reason for being in a situation where police were pointing guns at him while blocking his car in. But for people with past trauma involving the police they are likely thinking 'what if he was innocent?' because it has happened in the past that innocent black men have been treated as suspects. So they see this as a situation that could happen to them. It doesn't matter to them whether he was actually a criminal or not. Then most people are thinking that trying to ram your way out of a stop while guns are pointed at you is asking to be shot. But those who fear the police might see it as panic rather than mindless aggression. So there's this slight irony that both a significant quantity of serving police and the public believe there is systemic prejudice against police. While some minorities and their advocates believe they are the victims of systemic prejudice. I certainly wouldn't want the commissioner's job! Edit: There's also a fair bit of washover from the US and how black people are policed over there that logically shouldn't affect people's judgment but almost certainly does. Police shootings are actually incredibly rare in the UK even compared to most European nations.
-
I know it won't happen but I'd rather sensitive matters like the Kaba death were handled with respect for all parties as far as possible. The fact it went to court would mean the CPS believed there was a realistic prospect of a conviction for murder. I think I'd be interested to hear from people with expert knowledge.

I'm definitely concerned about the environment and I could go into a long explanation of why I hold various beliefs on this but it isn't necessary. Of course being anthropocentric should not mean not caring about the environment. Those who believe humanity should be centred and those who don't should both share a common concern for the environment. I definitely feel 'vegan' has certain negative connotations though. So I would recommend a less prohibitive approach to lowering the consumption of meat and animal products.
-
I'm extremely anthropocentric. I find most vegans aren't. Veganism as a philosophy places animals a lot closer to humans in terms of importance based on the idea that we are both sentient lifeforms. So they believe that animals are entitled to be treated with a similar level of respect to a human who has issues of communication. They disagree on principle over exploiting the natural power differential humanity enjoys over animals for human advancement. I don't see the world that way. I think a lot of environmentalist debate ends up being a proxy for people pushing some sort of agenda. It could be vegans or it could be those invested in the hydrocarbons sector. There's a lot of information overload out there at every level. One of the best ways to tackle environmental concerns is to end world poverty and get a handle on consumerism and capitalist excess. Overpopulation is an economic issue. Instead of having a debate over whether we should euthanise OAPs or bring back eugenics we could address the issues that are obvious. If the world had the same birth rate as first world nations it wouldn't be a problem. If advancements in technology and productivity were distributed fairly and more evenly instead of going to the top 1%, we wouldn't be worrying about meeting the basic needs of the 99%. If we got a grip on consumerism I don't think we would have the same economic pressures driving environmental crises. (No offence to any vegans, I just struggle to relate to them).

If I was 14 again and doing something worthy of being banned maybe. Anyway enough of this, I was only half joking. I think it's a lot easier to sit behind a computer screen and make people's messages disappear and feel all powerful but if you're politely asked why you are behaving so anti socially towards fellow foxes fans face to face maybe you wouldn't do it so readily. But I don't want to derail the thread. I guess I could invite all the people who had a problem with Dawn Butler and I could explain to them why having grown up in South East London during the 90s I think I have some relevant perspective. That I'm not looking to make people feel stupid or calling them racists but that I think the radical right plays on prejudices and fears of people who probably don't have a cosmopolitan upbringing. Not that the matter of an interpretation of poetry is relevant itself but we as a society need to rediscover how to discuss issues without rushing to the worst possible interpretation all the time. Then maybe we could all karaoke 'Imagine' by John Lennon

No I can't. I'm banned from general news for a completely reasonable post that I put effort into. I've been banned from other topics seemingly at random too. I've PMed Mark, I've even sent him an Email. He has never replied. I have PMed other Admins and they have replied as is the decent way to treat another person. But they have said the same thing 'this is Mark's site he makes the rules'. Would you be happy being treated like that? I would be happy to let it go because I just want to be able to post here without walking on invisible eggshells. If there was an alternative I would leave. But there is only the prehistoric talking balls and Bentley's Roof, neither are particularly appealing. I'm sure there are LCFC social media pages on places like Facebook and Reddit but they aren't structured to foster community. A by product of this behaviour is I haven't felt so keen on connecting more emotionally with anyone so I'm less inclined to attempt to be supportive or really put any effort.
-
I'd invite Mark so hopefully he could finally get whatever issue he has with me off his chest and stop preventing me from using the site in a way that had never caused problems before.
-
It's annoying after people liked a post having a pop at me for not reading the poem. Having a bit of time on a Sunday morning and seeing as I like Dawn Butler and it's black history month I thought I'd put some effort in. This is exactly why I don't usually bother doing that here. I tried to be respectful and not imply other people couldn't be offended by it.
-
I'm sad that my interpretation of Dawn Butler's poem that was in no way offensive or confrontational was deleted. Apparently I've been banned from the general news topic. So just a heads up to any of the decent posters here that you might want to avoid engaging because this nonsense is starting up again.

Don't be sorry. I can't imagine what that's like to love someone who is so unwell and can't love you back for so long. It must be frustrating when services are professionally bound to represent your daughter's wishes and perspective when they're so clearly not grounded in reality. Hoping for the best for you and your family.
