Good to see some of the recently injured/absent bowlers participating in today’s second eleven friendly at Derby and competing for places in the first eleven. Wright, Salisbury, Walker, Trevaskis all in the wickets but Mike seems to have stopped bowling part way through an over and only completed 3.1 overs in the day. Never a good sign!

I’m expecting Patel in for Kimber and Hull for Scriven, though I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see either Alex Green or Walker ahead of Hull. No mention of Trevaskis in the squad.

An interesting contrast in batting performances at the end of the day. Last evening, Leicestershire batted for 29 overs with a score at stumps of 120-1, whereas Lancashire, tonight, after 8 overs, are 16-3! Happy days!

Remember that Alfonso has made it clear that his philosophy is to use loan players to top up the contracted players. Currie has gone back to Hampshire but expect to see a replacement for him and Green and Goldsworthy too. They were all pretty useful.

Wishful thinking, though it is clear that there is a great deal of variation in opinions at the top. The business of Hampshire selling out to the Indians has certainly exposed the differences in the perspectives of the businessmen and the ECB.

I don’t see the point in this. NCs playing in the first round alone is of no value to anyone. Or are you suggesting they play a full quota of games in the ODC? I can’t see the ECB being interested in anything that does that. I think the friendly warm up is the right solution as things stand. The opportunity to play a FC County just once is an important event in the NC calendar.

The minor counties (or National Counties as they are now known) do not have first class status nor a full time playing staff. They are not equipped with facilities, staff or finances to play 14 four day games in a season. The players mostly have full time proper jobs!
