so guys, im kind of discussing the same thing in two different threads. We really should move this conversation over to the climate change thread...
-
I can gaurentee you the profits some of these companies can make in 20 years will massively outstrip the cost of doing so
-
as has been mentioned, there is no reason why we can not adapt the refineries we have. its been mentioned that it is ' cost prohibitive' to do that, but i will interpret that as the oil companies not wanting to eat into their own profits.
-
We should always set the bar high to avoid complacency
-
If you're talking about the reduction in oil prices... I Hate to say this because i despise the guy, but one think i have to give trump credit for is overseeing a marked drop in fuel prices n the United states. He openly and brazenly repeated that he was doing a deal with the oil companies for basically throwing licenses around like confetti. Now i should point out is was likely for different reasons than what we are talking about it, my point being the issuing country can have some sway when issuing licenses... I also would suggest that something being ' cost prohibitve' is an excuse and can be interpreted as saying it will eat into the oil companies profits.

i agree entirely that this is a global issue. and part of what i am saying is that the pressure should be focused on those who are not just lagging behind, but those tat seem to not care so much. I didn't mean to imply that we can just be content we are doing our part although i can quite se why people would see ive been saying that.. im trying to suggest that squeezing a faster progress out of us is going to be less beneficial than the massive changes we can get from getting some more countries onboard..
-
well, thats kind of how contracts work - you negotiate to make sure both sides get what they want. and to your second point, just because we currently have the wrong type of refinery for the oil we produce does not mean that can not be changed or adapted.
-
We don't have a choice. However, more can be gained by the focus being on some of the larger consumers of oil and gas than a nation that is already leading the way
-
they want the license, we issue it on our terms.
-
what lol. i never suggested otherwise, We do however decide what taxes and tarrifs can go on british produced 'goods' and that produced overseas.
-
i'd like to see some evidence for that claim
-
This is for the existing permits and licenses. Under no obligation doesn't mean they will refuse to. Besides, they want more licenses as part of the contract can make it that they have to sell at least part of it to the British market
-
we will, we re doing, its just going to take time.
-
Dos this not argue the case we need to be producing more of our own oil, if we are consuming more than we are extracting?
-
i couldn't have made it clearer that this is with the intention of continuing to make the transition to more renewable sources. with each new license, less oil will need to be inported. Do we have that luxury? The problem is the length of time it took to take this issue seriously. Its going to be a long process. Period. The problem is not the UK.. we are 3rd on the list of nations taking action and making the transitions. the attention should be aimed at other nations speeding up THEIR process. we are a tiny small nation, us speeding up the process of 10-15 years will have the most minute of impacts whilst much larger nations speeding up their process by even 5 years will have a far greater impact..

And the think to take note about this is " what do Russia consider to be their state?" We all know that the next step of the supposed wantaway 4 areas is a declaration of independence. and im absolutely sure that they will then ' vote' to join Russia,.so they would eventually be considered part of the state...
-
in fairness to @leicsmac's concerns, The Russian regime has gone on record as saying a future without Russia is no future at all and its right to be concerned about that. So in other words we cant defeat them too convincingly, only a little bit . Or better still, hope this all drags on long enough for them to consider the cons of staying outweigh the pros...
-
and yet the UK IMPORTED 30 billion pounds worth of oil in 2021 and this is the segment we should be looking at with regards to the point i was making.
-
No i understand that this is their stated desire. I . And i have a lot of sympathy with their concerns. However, i just cant align myself with the idea that its ok if someone produces oil just as long as it isn't us, which is pretty much what they are wanting by protesting against the issuing of new permits. I actually think it would be so much better for us AND the environment if we are the ones producing oil rather than having it shipped in from thousands of miles away.. The cost of oil would be so much cheaper and therefore the cost of pretty much everything else would be so much cheaper and therefore the cost of living in general , Whilst we continue to make the transition to more renewable energy sources where possible. I have just accepted thats going to happen at a slightly more manageable pace than some have. I feel we are making good progress and are one of the nations leading the way and this should be recognised.

That does sound like a classic case of there being some kind of imbalance within your hormones/ chemicals. and that is often how depression/ anxiety and even being overwhelmed can be. Rest assured that its not you and not based around how 'badly' you are dealing with things or how badly you are reacting to things. Try your absolute best to stay positive.. pull out your favorite albums, get your favoite drink! Stay strong, my friend!

I agree this is a global issue and my only point is that the UK is not the issue, the rest of the world is. We are setting a fantastic example ( still a ways to go ) and if some nations were even making half the strides we were making, the global outlook wouldn’t be so grim. We’d all be in a better place if more nations were stepping up to the plate. Now im not suggesting we shouldn’t change direction and embrace all things oil, but I do actually think it would be better for the global environment for us to be producing our own oil in the short term ( next 20-30 years) than shipping it thousands of miles around the world
-
i Think some elements of Just stop oil are hoping for exactly that. Otherwise, why protest? it would be very short sighted of them to not see the progress the UK is making. We are literally miles ahead of so many other nations in that respect. the UK is literally 3rd on the list of nations leading the way in renewable energy. https://www.climatecouncil.org.au/11-countries-leading-the-charge-on-renewable-energy/

id much rather we produce our own oil than feed another monster like we have done Russia. Whilst some people are throwing orange paint around, people in Ukraine are having their lives destroyed by a war machine we have helped to feed by buying their oil and Europe their gas.
-
You cant really though can you? its a process and it will take time. If you look around the world, the UK is lightyears ahead of many many nations and this should be recognized. We are on the right path. sure, apply political pressure to keep up the moment but painting a sports venue orange will only result in ridicule and laughter.

Its original location was towards the bottom of the Haymarket opposite where the old ABC cinema was. I remember hearing many moons ago that the EDF were going to march past it and were looking for a bit of trouble. I was well up for that and decided it was my moral duty to protect that place. They were very nervous serving me that day ( i'm as pasty white as they come!) . When they walked passed, They banged on the windows a bit as they went past but i was mouthing off to them and they obviously couldn't be bothered. Ive calmed down a bit these days. Not that mental anymore
