Hitesh Posted 5 September 2005 Posted 5 September 2005 Cant remember who and even if it was on this forum, but someone asked about this a couple weeks ago and i have found the answer. Someone asked if you need a TV License even if you dont watch TV and only play games/watch DVD's! I looked on their website and found this... You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence. Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at: TV Licensing Bristol BS98 1TL I might do that then!
andy_croydz Posted 5 September 2005 Posted 5 September 2005 Thats interesting! but i spose the way they find out if you only use them to watch videos, play games on etc is if you dont have an aerial because if you had an aerial then i doubt they would let ya get away with it because you could easily just connect it up and watch a bit of tv from it and not be paying your license

I never had an aerial at my last house and yet I still had to pay a full tv licence!

Anish Posted 5 September 2005 Posted 5 September 2005 Safer just to buy one to be honest I got through my entire final year at uni (living in a house) without buying a TV licence...cos the guy that was meant to buy it was a lazy git and none of us others could be arsed either!

fox-trot Posted 5 September 2005 Posted 5 September 2005 tv liecence, you dont need to pay it. alot of the programmes the bbc produce are on their websites. you can also defuse the bbc on your telly, is that right?
cisono Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 you can also defuse the bbc on your telly, is that right? Not sure what you mean there...?
Hitesh Posted 6 September 2005 Author Posted 6 September 2005 Not sure what you mean there...? Nor do i!
Guest Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 We don't have an aerial. Such is the joy of satellites. Seriously, there was a guy I worked wit some years ago, who doesn't own a TV let alone an aerial. Because the authorities knew he didn't have a licence, he used to get regular visits from the authorities checking up. It does seem like students can get away without buying one, but I wouldn't take the risk.
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 We always had one and got regular letters about it anyway, reminding us that it was expiring etc. It's not exactly that much money is it?
cisono Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 We always had one and got regular letters about it anyway, reminding us that it was expiring etc. It's not exactly that much money is it? Nope. In fact, I do have a TV license. I am only asking because our telly is out of action (and has been for 2 months now). I was wondering if we need to renew the license, given that we don't have a TV set...
cisono Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 We don't have an aerial. Such is the joy of satellites. Been thinking about that too (I find cable restricting - not many non-English channels). Please give me some details of the satellite setup you have...
Guest Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Been thinking about that too (I find cable restricting - not many non-English channels). Please give me some details of the satellite setup you have... I'm afraid it's Sky Digital, I am ashamed to admit we've subsribed to the Murdoch Empire, selling our souls to the corporate devil. However, it does have an array of non-English channels available. Was there any in particular you wanted to view? The only one I watch is S4C, but that's because I want to learn Welsh.
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 I learnt a bit of Welsh from my friend Laura. Wish I could remember it now. Must get her posting on here.

I am interested in most European languages, plus Japanese and possibly Chinese. Unfortunately, NTL doesn't carry many non-English channels...

Cat Burger Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Hitesh it was me who asked about it, well basically living in halls there is bound to be an aerial provided, I don't think I'll get it away with it. I'm just gonna pay it I think.
Newcastle_Fox Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Dont bother with a TV in halls, when I was in my 1st year I didnt bother with a TV licence. Only knew 2 people who had TV licences. They are hardly gonna fine 200-300 students would be bad press, worst you will get is a warning from them if they catch you and I would buy one then!
