Head Honcho Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Personally i would go for Collingwood,Anderson can be expensive,if the Aussie batsmen hit form Anderson could be cruxified
Foxes_Wizard_Striker Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Collingwood no question but why don't we use a other reserve swing englishman bowler? am not sure if Collingwood can do that?
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Anderson. No question in my mind. Although to be honest, neither are a patch on Jones, who will be sorely missed. I wasn't his biggest fan a year or so ago but to be fair to him, he's worked really hard at his game. Lost a bit of pace since his injury but now bowls a very good controlled line (when in form) and has the ability to get a lot of late (reverse) swing. In short, he's become a very handy wicket taking bowler with the ability to dismiss some of the world's top batsmen. Whoever replaces him, the Aussies will look to go after, in my opinion.. It's an interesting one.
Simon Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Anderson, we will need the extra option in our bowling attack. Collingwood is a bit of an all-rounder but I'd say Anderson is a better bowler- which IMO is what we need.
john_lcfc Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 we have the bowling in harmison flintoff giles and hoggard to bowl them out with maybe jones making a perfect bowling attack. i would play collingwood as we only need to draw the test match and he would offer more depth to our batting line up
C-man Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 I would play collingwood. i know people would think its defensive, but he can bowl a bit too, and i think it would be unfair to pick a player out-of-form ahead of collingwood.
Shum Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 Collingwood for me. He will strenghten the batting and fielding and can also bowl a decent medium pace if needed. Otherwise I think we can survive with the other 4 bowlers.
Sparky Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 id go for collingwood , he seems to have iron nerve and nothing phases him at all , if jimmy anderson goes for 15+ early in his spell then he will fall to pieces come on england !!!
toonboy Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 I'm really hoping it is Collingwood. Anderson couldn't hit the same spot twice if you paid him and his batting is weaker than Jones'. Bolster the batting line-up with a sensible batsmen and a very decent bowler.
john_lcfc Posted 6 September 2005 Posted 6 September 2005 why isnt tremlett in the frame? i thought he was the reserve seemer was i wrong
Head Honcho Posted 6 September 2005 Author Posted 6 September 2005 12-1 to Collingwood so far. You watch England will end up picking Anderson and the Aussies will hit him for six
Hitesh Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 Anderson! He has being playing well recently and i dont think Collingwood is as good with the ball as Anderson. I dont think we need that extra batsmen at the expense of a better bowling option.
Rugby Fox Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 Collingwood - he can bat as well as bowling good medium pace.
TrickyTrev Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 Anderson. We have dominated the aussies with 5 bowlers and whilst Anderson is inconsistent he is capable fo magic deliveries and taking wickets. Forget about Collingwood as a Test Match all rounder. If you select him it would be purely as a batsmen as his bowling is inept in the longer form of the game. He hardly bowls for Durham in their first class games, never mind as an England seamer.
Samu Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 I think they'll have to pick Collingwood on this season's form. I wonder who else was in contention when they chose the squad. Am I right in thinking that Gough was considered? That would have been interesting as there's certainly no one who deserves beating the Aussies more than Goughy and he certainly would have put everything into his performance.

Interestingly enough though, this season Collingwood has taken 20 first class wickets at an average of 30 and Anderson has taken about 55 also at an average of 30. Would Anderson really take that many wickets if he were to play?

Do we really need 5 bowlers? I know it has been succesful but we would have 3 quicks and giles plus Collingwood aswell as Vaughan+Bell who could put in some overs.
Ultra Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 Australia need to take 20 wickets in this test, or they lose the Ashes, simple as. It therefore makes sense to go with an extra batsman, especially someone who's proved in the one-day series he can stick around for a few hours if need be. Plus Collingwood's also one of the best fielders in the world. He's almost worth a place in the team for that alone, especially in a game where catches (taken or dropped) can make all the difference.
Hitesh Posted 8 September 2005 Posted 8 September 2005 I change my mind to Collingwood! Oh, and look...he has just been announced in the squad!
