Babylon Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 This thread is for all of your force awakens spoiler discussion, If you're in this thread, haven't watched the film and don't want it spoiling.... go away.
MrSpaM Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 So what do we think Rey's actual back story is? She didn't just get these force powers from nowhere. There are some pretty telling scenes that imply that she is some relation to the either Han and Leia, or Luke. - Before she flies off to find Luke after completing the map, the embrace her and Leia have seems to imply that they have met before - She has a force induced flashback scene that is incredibly similar to Luke's in Empire Strikes Back when he is training with Yoda. You can even hear yoda's and obi wans voice at one point during this scene if you listen carefully. - She seems to be a natural pilot, very similar to Luke. - The scene where she puts the rebel pilot's helmet on, whilst sitting at the foot of a downed AT-AT, both are nods to Luke in The Empire Strikes Back I think it's fairly safe to say that Rey is Luke's daughter, who was kept out of Luke's jedi academy after Kylo and his knights turned on Luke and his pupils. It looks like from another part of the flashback scene that she was left on a planet when she was very young by her parents, as she is seem screaming at a ship asking it not to leave, which would also back up the theory of her being hidden for some reason.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 Well I thought we should wait a while for this thread but that's just because I know I'd be really tempted to click on it, but I guess if you're a mega fan you'll of seen it by now. I thought it was brilliant. The stuff about Reys character being under developed I get, but also think that this is going to be explored a lot more in the next film and she'll feel fully fleshed out, I'm sure we'll get in to why she is who she is and how she is what she is, the ending obviously hints at this, as well as the flashback. I never really thought of her as being under developed, more mysterious, a lot of my questions are about her. I'm not buying she's Lukes Daughter for a second, she is clearly very, very powerful, she'd known she had the force for a few hours and she was mind tricking stormtroopers and got inside Bens head when he was trying to get in hers, a Skywalker no less. That's not someone on a Skywalker level imo. Also my theory is the massive hologram Voldermort is like Yoda size in real life.

Yes all very much hints at her being a Skywalker, that's obviously what they want us to think. Either Luke got it off with a really powerful jedi woman or she is something else entirely, she got too powerful too fast to be a skywalker imo.
Captain... Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 Saw it last night overall good, some great nostalgia moments, loved the abandoned ships collecting sand on Jakku and seeing the X-wings skim over the water on a cavalry charge was awesome and I have no real complaints about the finale, it completely absorbed me and flew by... ...but it wasn't awesome, the opening scene was a bit weird, just didn't look or feel very star warsy and I don't know why, I think I was getting too hung up trying to think who the old man was, turns out nobody, and Poe didn't grab me as a character straight away, but I did like the force block on the blaster and the introduction of Kylo Ren, I think Finn's progression, like Rey was just too quick, I also didn't like lady stormtrooper commander, nor understand why she would be so compliant when threatened with a blaster later on, I didn't like Kylo Ren when he took his helmet off either, he looked like a young Professor Snape playing a petulant teen these were all minor things. The worst bit was that CGI sequence that was mentioned in the other thread, with the Scottish space gang and the other ones it was just all a bit unnecessary and made Harrison Ford look too old for this, and brought back memories of the prequels, clunky dialogue, unfeasible feats of luck and unnecessary CGI. Overall it was a very good film and doesn't damage the originals in any way, but inevitably the originals will detract from it, as there is no way it can live up to the nostalgia and burden of expectation.
Babylon Posted 18 December 2015 Author Posted 18 December 2015 I'm so glad Voldermort turned out to be a hollogram... I was sat shaking my head at that shit until it flickered and went off. I don't get what they were trying to achieve with that at all. You can't tell me a dark figure normal size sat alone in that room wouldn't have just been more menacing than a giant shit cgi Voldermort.

Sums it up nicely.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 The hologram dude was obviously the new 'emperor', the mystery of him and a few other things was great imo, makes you wonder who he is, where he is etc. I honestly think once the trilogy is finished the rushed characterization will be a very minor complaint, also sure there was a lot of stuff left on the cutting room floor which will be on extended editions in the future, it could and probably should of been 20 minutes longer but I'm sure they just wanted to keep it concise and cram in loads of action, I thought it was paced very well and didn't feel like it crumbled under the weight of expectation, as it so easily could of. it's just a shame we have to wait 3 years to find out more.

Either Luke got it off with a really powerful jedi woman or she is something else entirely, she got too powerful too fast to be a skywalker imo. I was wondering, but I just can't see anything else. She's surely going to link through to the past films, so it must be someone we know... being related to Ben in some way will set up future battles and the attempt to turn him to the light side. Actually give her a reason to care, rather than just wanting him dead.
MrSpaM Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 Also what was the look about that Luke gave Rey at the end of the film when she went to hand the lightsaber over, he looked completely horrified! I was wondering, but I just can't see anything else. Actually give her a reason to care, rather than just wanting him dead. I was thinking maybe she could be some relation to Ben Kenobi as well, that would also work

You can do new emperor and mystery without the need to be a giant shit Voldermort. I like the idea of him being tiny in real life (if that's true)... but it was just TOO big for me, it just didn't feel star wars like that. You could have had a 8 ft hologram and achieved the same thing, without it looking a bit silly.
Babylon Posted 18 December 2015 Author Posted 18 December 2015 Also what was the look about that Luke gave Rey at the end of the film when she went to hand the lightsaber over, he looked completely horrified! He ran away... seeing the light saber I presume it brought back what he was running from. PS. How much did he get paid for 30 seconds work?
Captain... Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 Also the Nazi rally scene was a bit unnecessary and why were the good guys called the resistance, I thought the Empire had fallen and that there was a new republic in charge.
MrSpaM Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 PS. How much did he get paid for 30 seconds work? This was exactly what me and my mate were saying last night on the way out
Babylon Posted 18 December 2015 Author Posted 18 December 2015 Also the Nazi rally scene was a bit unnecessary and why were the good guys called the resistance, I thought the Empire had fallen and that there was a new republic in charge. General Hux... I think he over egged the pudding with his acting. Oh and star killer base was a bit ****ing shit really. 40 years and all then can dream up is the Death Star Mk3. Hated when they did they Death Star / Star Killer comparison graphic.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 She could of been conceived by the force itself, how she got in Bens mind so quickly after being aware of her powers for such a short period of time is what has me thinking she is something else entirely, more powerful than anything we've ever seen before. Also when she went all zen during the lightsaber battle I absolutely loved. Obviously everything hints to her being a Skywalker but I'm not convinced.

I didn't have a problem with him being so big given it was just a hologram, I thought the chamber he was in looked really cool.
separator Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 I didn't really get Starkiller base. It had to drain the nearby sun to charge its batteries, surely once the sun was dead Starkiller base is knackered, its a planet so can't move like a death star, also without a sun the planet would die.
MrSpaM Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 General Hux... I think he over egged the pudding with his acting. This was the the only thing i found a bit disappointing really, all they could think of was another death star, with an extremely dumb vulnerability, again
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 Well I guess given how powerful it was as a weapon they'd only need to use it a few times to destroy everything they needed to, once the sun was drained they wouldn't need it anymore. That's how I saw it anyway.
MrSpaM Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 Well I guess given how powerful it was as a weapon they'd only need to use it a few times to destroy everything they needed to, once the sun was drained they wouldn't need it anymore. That's how I saw it anyway. To be fair, all they were looking for was the rebel base, that's all they wanted to destroy really
Babylon Posted 18 December 2015 Author Posted 18 December 2015 I didn't really get Starkiller base. It had to drain the nearby sun to charge its batteries, surely once the sun was dead Starkiller base is knackered, its a planet so can't move like a death star, also without a sun the planet would die. My take was... if they can drain a sun and destroy half a dozen planets in an hour, they can probably move the planet somehow. I think you could remove the star killer base thing from the whole story to be honest. Just the rescue alone would have set up all the other things that happened on the planet.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 It reminded me of when America nuked Japan and they surrendered. They want to control the galaxy, imagine the order rock up and say 'yo, we're in charge now or you're getting the sunblast shizzle', you wouldn't have a choice but to fall in line.
Babylon Posted 18 December 2015 Author Posted 18 December 2015 To be fair, all they were looking for was the rebel base, that's all they wanted to destroy really Spend 40 years building it... good job the rebels didn't just move planet in that time or they would have been fecked
Captain... Posted 18 December 2015 Posted 18 December 2015 General Hux... I think he over egged the pudding with his acting. Oh and star killer base was a bit ****ing shit really. 40 years and all then can dream up is the Death Star Mk3. Hated when they did they Death Star / Star Killer comparison graphic. I liked the comparison graphic, it was this is like a death star but a fvckton bigger and more powerful, it is the next evolutionary step in planet destroying technology. I didn't really get Starkiller base. It had to drain the nearby sun to charge its batteries, surely once the sun was dead Starkiller base is knackered, its a planet so can't move like a death star, also without a sun the planet would die. A nearby sun, there could be many, or it could have a long range, but most likely is it could move, if it had enough energy to blow up multiple worlds, that it could use that energy to propel the planet through space, especially after destroying a sun and therefore the gravitational pull of the sun, maybe after destroying the sun it would get pulled into the gravitational orbit of the closest active sun, and by sun I mean star and it did annoy me that they called it a starkiller (Luke's original surname) but said it absorbed the power of the sun. This was the the only thing i found a bit disappointing really, all they could think of was another death star, with an extremely dumb vulnerability, again You say another death star, but that is what star wars is about, it's like saying, more bloody lightsabres, X-wings and inter galactic civil war it was the next step in awesome displays of power, and the vulnerability wasn't anywhere near as stupid as an exhaust port. It was absorbing the power of the sun, of course it was going to be unstable somewhere. Loved the Falcon and X-wings flying out of the exploding planet, pure star wars.
