AFL 2016 & 2017

Ah no way!

Abit out of touch with AFL, I used to take alot of interest but i've not for a few years now.

I 'follow' Geelong, just had a look at their team and the game that's being played right now, they have a player called Vardy in their team! Awesome.

Nathan Vardy's having a party!

If/When I get BT Sport or a Kodi box I can hopefully get back into it - I'm pretty sure BT Sport cover it?

They used to but I haven't been able to find it on there the last couple of weeks. There's always a stream on Kodi though

Squeaked out a 1758-1701 win in AFL Fantasy to break a three-game skid, wheeeeeeeeeeee

I'm tied for 8th on points but lose the tiebreaker as it stands on point differential percentage (what do you call it?), 100% to my 99%. Long season to go, but if I make the finals I will consider my season to be a smashing success and an utter embarrassment for anybody finishing below me.

We just call it percentage.

No one really plays AFL fantasy, everyone does AFL Supercoach by the Herald Sun and do draft leagues etc.

Got any Saints players?

Err... There's no easy way to say this... But I have no Sainters on my team... I heard... Well... I was under the impression that their team wasn't very good :/

On the plus side, I decided this a few weeks ago:

So at least there's that, right?

We have the best in the game Nick Riewoldt, genuine superstar of the game

Are you sure you don't mean his cousin, Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt? ;)

(I do have Jack on my team, incidentally. He's been OK.)

I think I'm starting to "get" AFL a little more because I was enthralled by much of the Doggies vs Crows game that I watched when I woke up this morning (I DVRed it, **** getting up at 5:30 on a Saturday unless it's for Leicester :P). It was a really intense game full of big momentum swings, but it was a lot closer than it ought to have been considering how often the Dogs were inside the 50, all the scoring kicks (is that a term?) they had (18.15, come on, this could have been a blowout), huge early lead, and their advantage in possessions/disposals. The Crows are complaining about how many more free kicks the Dogs had--I admit it seemed to me that there were a few soft free kicks given the Dogs' way in the center square, and it didn't seem like such a well-officiated game, but a lot of that had to do with the Dogs looking like they were just much quicker to the ball, especially when it was on the ground. It wasn't like the refs missed egregious fouls and dirty play, but let's say this was a finals game: would the refs "swallow their whistles" and "let them play," as we Americans say?

I'm also starting to see how important it is to have good rucks, because so much of the attacks in that game started with hit outs to the middle of the park.

One thing that still kind of bugs me is how sometimes, teams' defenders can get beat over the top, especially at times when you'd think it'd be the last thing you'd want. For example, with the Dogs up by 8 with less than five minutes to go, Bailey Dale kicked a behind. But the Crows hit out to midfield from the restart almost immediately, they won the ball, it was immediately hit over the top to Eddie Betts (who seems like the absolute last man on that team you'd forget about, even if he didn't have a great game) who took the mark in acres of space within 20 meters from goal. He just simply handballed it to Josh Jenkins who was able to blast it home uncontested. All of this took 18 seconds. What the hell was that? When it's less than a 2 goal game, wouldn't teams want to drop back? Could that have just been a collective or defensive lapse by the Dogs, or do teams want to play their defenders high so as to stop the other team from kicking short and taking marks from around the 50?

Anyway, I'm gonna see if the Sainters vs Roos is on later as I'm staying in tonight and might need to have a little whiskey to get rid of this fought I've got. :P

Edit to add that one other thing I don't quite get is what's up with all these gay pornstar names going around the AFL? Just on the Bulldogs, you've got Jordan Roughead, Easton Wood, Matt Suckling, and last but not least Jake "The Package" Stringer lol

Tigers-Swans was siiiick... Watched a good portion of the game, but missed when the Tiges won AFTER THE SIREN (I've just learned that winning AFTER THE SIREN is a really big deal). Hell of a game before that, though.

I spent last night at my mom's place, and when I woke up after a train went roaring though nearby at 2:45 am :/ I fired up the Demons vs Doggies game on my phone. Watched most of the 3rd quarter with the Dogs up 5 goals and showing the Dees dees nuts before falling back asleep, and that's about how it ended. Big ups to li'l "Libba," Tom Liberatore, for tying the AFL record for tackles in a game with 19. He's the first name I knew from the Dogs because I recognized his father, Tony (the original "Libba") from "Year of the Dogs."

As for Roo Fox, I watched the Sainters give a damn good fight to North Melbourne last weekend... Not gonna mention this weekend. :|

I'm bringing in Maverick Weller to my team this week--partly because I'd have to think the Sainters can get it together and beat Essendope, and partly because Maverick is an awesome name.

By the way, have you ever seen this mini-documentary from  the 90s about St Kilda fans called "Heathens?" I hear it's just 30 minutes of a group of drunk St Kilda fans swearing, so I feel like that's something I absolutely have to see.

Nah not heard about it, wouldn't surprise me we were a rubbish team most of the 80s and 90s except 97 when we should of won the Grand Final.

Rubbish team but biggest Social Club, supporters and players a like. When you're not winning it's about all there is too do

Win for the Sainters this weekend, I feel like that was a game they absolutely had to have. It doesn't really seem like anybody can hate St Kilda; you seem like a decent club, and everybody likes an underdog.

Kangaroos look unbeatable for now but I can definitely see them falling back down to earth. Perhaps I'm guilty of being like those pundits chatting shit about Leicester, but they've got the Swans, Richmond, Geelong (who I think look really good), Hawthorn, the Crows and West Coast all in a row, and I think that stretch of games will be a real problem.

The Giants shut down the Doggies--kind of surprised to see GWS where they are, but they're playing good ball. I can't believe Freo are 0-9, hahaha wha the **** happened to them lol

Also, Buddy Franklin was beast again on Friday night. Dude scored from 70 meters out. That dude is a monster. When he's feeling it, he's unstoppable.

Bulldogs vs Collingwood is on TV next weekend, definitely getting a few beers and staying up to watch that. Doggies are gonna bounce back and whip Collingwood's asses.

I've got to say once again that I'm really glad I've "adopted" the Dogs. Having a team makes following the league a lot easier, but it helps that they play a good style of footy. Sure, they've had some help via the draft, but they've still done really well to rebuild their squad into finals challengers.

I like Luke Beveridge, too. He's done very well to foster a great environment at the club, particularly since he took over before last season with the club in some turmoil. This guy cares an awful lot about the club and his players. He's been getting some shit by Crows fans because of a back and forth with their manager over the refereeing in their game, but I think Bevo was right to speak out. Also, I can't really fault him for being defensive over the Talia leak "scandal" during the finals last year.

I'm glad the Doggies have reserve footy in the VFL back at Whitten Oval to bring footy back to the club's Footscray heartland, and that they've been promoting their women's team.

They seem like they do a fantastic job with their community and are a "club" through and through. I'm especially respectful of their "Sons of the West" men's health program. The club was alarmed by how men in the western suburbs are more likely to be dealing with things like obesity and mental health problems than their cohorts across Melbourne and Victoria, so they've set up a free men's health program around the West that's incorporated with the club, players, and staff--and it's been a huge success. I feel like every big-league pro sports team should run a program like this.

They also seem like they do a lot of good work with the community considering the changing demographics of Footscray and the other suburbs. According to the Bulldogs, they are the only professional sports team in Australia that receive grants from the government to run programs to assist refugees in settling with their new communities via sport.

Awesome win for the Sainters vs Geelong. I watched the 4th quarter and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Why was Dangerfield waiting to come on for the Cats for what seemed like five minutes towards the end there?

Maybe I wasn't 100% right about the Cats, but I was about the Kangas.

Kangas have an old side and don't have much spark if things aren't going there way. Had an easy draw to help them at the start.

Cats are too reliant at the moment of 2 genuine gun players need blokes around them to stand up.

Top 8 is set for Finals, Crows look great, GWS until last week were a massive dark horse with so much young talent and speed. Hawks and Swans been there done that. Doggies getting too many injuries but keep on winning.

I need a team to support. Not Hawthorne, they seem to me to be the Man U of Aussies rules. I need a Leicester like team, a bit unfashionable might just win it one day.
