Yep, voters have short memories. They also often see what they want to see: e.g. lots of Scottish lefties seeing the SNP as a party of the radical left, when most evidence suggests that it is a centrist opportunist party of populist nationalism, though admittedly one that's very good at using the media to promote its self-image as "the party on the side of everyday Scottish people".....I suppose your Mussolini quote could apply to that!

In Wales, it would surely be unworkable for the Tories and UKIP to be in a governing alliance led by Leanne Wood, who lambasted Miliband for not being leftist enough a year ago!

They've all publicly made the point that Labour has no majority and will have to compromise with someone, and I can't see the publicity hurting UKIP or the Tories, but surely Plaid's tactics are a massive cock-up? They were in a strong position where they could have demanded some Plaid influence over policies implemented by Labour (claiming influence over positive stuff, but distancing themselves from unpopular policies). Now, if Labour have any sense, they'll do a deal with the Lib Dem and leave Plaid out in the cold, surely? I can imagine Labour mentioning the putative Plaid/Tory/UKIP alliance a lot over coming years, too.
