The Vasa Museum in Stockholm

Hello Folks,

Apologies for a first post about such an odd subject, but please bear with me.

On the BBC national news this evening was a piece about the 'Mary Rose' exhibition in Portsmouth, which gives us a chance after 35 years to finally see Henry VIII's 16th Century flagship

with very little 'scaffolding' to obstruct the view.

Later on, on East Midlands Today, they mentioned that Leicester City are playing Barcelona in Stockholm on 3rd August.

If any of you are going to Stockholm for the match, and want to see the world's only remaining 17th Century warship, have a look for the Vasa Museum. If you are able to go,

having visited it myself, I can guarantee you will be completely astonished by it. The Mary Rose is 80 years older, but only perhaps 20% complete. The Vasa is almost completely

intact, having lost only the tops of its masts since it sank in 1628, and is honestly one of the wonders of the world.

Sadly, in this country, it's almost unknown, so I thought I'd join the forum to let you know about it as it would be such a shame to make the trip to Stockholm and miss it.

It helps that Stockholm itself is a beautiful city, and nearly everbody there speaks English.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post links on here as a newbie, but if you have a search on Google for 'Vasa Museum', you'll be able to read all about it.

I hope this is of interest to you.

Incidentally, I'm from Leicestershire and have lived here all my life, lest anyone think I'm some kind of odd Swedish museum freak infiltrating your forum!

Been there and done that some years ago when we did the Sweden Tour under Eriksson. The Vasa is a beautifully restored ship and worth the visit.

Although be warned - queues can be rather long in the summer months!

If you get the chance, drop by the restaurant inside the museum. Great food to be found there.

We have a potential sinking war ship In Leicester buddy Any Swedish cure for rats jumping off A sinking ship ?

and the vasa might be grand to look at , but it will ever be as good as the dry dock on curry and pint for a fiver nights !

Now that's a fecking boat !

Yes and it was brilliant. I've seen the Mary Rose too but the Vasa is absolutely incredible how complete it is.

I find it mental how nautical experts (even in the 1600s) could get a design so wrong. Not as if the ballast is an optional part of getting a ship to stay afloat lol

Just another highlight in a great week there.

Yes mate, been three times before, but went with one of my lads who had never been, in between bar hopping.

Must say one of the best museums around and cheap to get in, considering how expensive Stockholm is. Probably the only real tourist attraction in the city.

Great, I'm glad it lived up to my rambling first post.

I love Stockholm (one of only two foreign places I've ever been) and I'd love to visit the city again,

but a mixture of a wife scared of flying (actually, crashing...) and my dislike of sea travel mean I

probably never will. And as for driving there (on the wrong side of the road...) eeek!

May the forthcoming season live up to all your hopes and expectations.
