Honestly is boring as Fcuk now

dedlock Posted 24 September 2016 Posted 24 September 2016 We have played 2 of the top 6 away and been found wanting. Liverpool would have dismantled most teams the way they played. We were getting on top before Smalling's goal. What was poor was conceding 3 from corners and 3 in 5 or 6 minutes. 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 ,whatever system, needs concentration at set pieces and better defending. We have 2 tough away games next up and need to tighten up, an extra body in midfield may help but not if we defend like drains again.
inckley fox Posted 24 September 2016 Posted 24 September 2016 Obviously a 4-4-2 without Kante is starting to look ineffective against the better team. Even though three of today's goals came from situations which were rooted in poor concentration rather than tactical miscalculations, the team were clearly more comfortable with the extra body in midfield, and Gray supported the forward very well. I don't think it's a matter of us being sussed, I just suspect we can't always play 4-4-2 effectively without Kante. Hopefully there will be a serious effort to replace him in January, and maybe then we'll get to see a little more of the formation which won us the league. For now, I agree that a 4-5-1 looks like the best option, perhaps with Gray and Mahrez as the wide attackers and either Vardy/Slimani in the middle. It'd allow Drinkwater to get into more attacking positions and rely less on that Hollywood ball he seems to be constantly looking for. It'll mean more bodies in the middle, more protection for the defence. And I'd seriously look at whether Albrighton is an option at RB too. Simpson is having a pretty awful time of it. Beyond that, I doubt we'll see 3-5-2. It has its advantages (Albrighton, Amartey, Schlupp, Fuchs can all play wing-back; we get to keep the Vardy-Slimani double act up front etc.), but Drinkwater / Mahrez / Gray will all want to be the guy at the head of the midfield three. It will be awkward to accommodate more than one of them in a 3-5-2.

Before anyone comments on us conceding too many due to the formation, 8 corners is pretty close to average I reckon. played well for first 20 then proper went to shit after they'd scored. Maybe 4-51 will shore us up a bit but can't be relying on 20-25 yard screamers to pick us points up every week and when you let in 3 corners from 8 the formation is actually irrelevant. Spot on. Goals change games and 4-4-2 didn't look too shabby for 20 minutes today. They score from a set piece and we fall apart. I think more than 4-4-2 the problem is that the back 4 is getting pulled all over the place this season. Last year Huth and Morgan never left the width of their penalty area - similarly the amount of times Simpson or Fuchs got caught upfield could be counted on one hand.
