I mean in terms of general athleticism. Most Rugby players have to use every aspect of fitness. Speed, strength, power, endurance both cardiovascular and muscular. An American footballer will most likely excell at a few of these. For me this makes a rugby player arguably the best athlete and all round athlete on the planet. Saying that, it is unlikely that a rugby player could perform a roll in an American football team unless they were exceptional in a particular area. What the American footballers are good at, they are really really good at. But I don't think many of them would be fit enough overall to play rugby. But it's similar to golf in that they aren't amazing athletes because they only use a few aspects of fitness. It's the same with any sport really and is all a bit subjective i suppose because every sport is so different. Although some of the tackling in American football is woeful. If they used rugbys tackling technique they wouldn't miss and bounce off so much. They are far too keen on the shoulder charge. All for show I suppose.
