Well, the rule is so you can protect English players and still be in compliance with EU law -- it would be illegal to discriminate between nationalities, and this is a loophole -- Huth was homegrown, too!

I don't think so -- we couldn't play Barnes when he was U21 and he came back near the end of 2018 after Barnsley's season was over. Blackwell said the reason was because the loans hadn't gone through at the beginning of the season, and Slimani and Silva were chosen over Diabate and Ghezzal (who also missed the deadline). I don't really feel sorry for James -- he wasn't going to be match fit -- but we have a couple of U23's that could have been slotted in those spots (unlikely they would have made a bench appearance, but it must be a punch in the gut to know it is literally impossible for you to step up)

U21s can all take part in the squad as additional registered players, not sure if there is anyone other than James who it is   Not eligible to make the squad.

Uche and George Thomas are both no longer U21's, so would have be registered in the squad.
