A Day For England

Absolutely agree with you Mark (Deathside).

I'm not Christian - I'm not anything, other than undecided etc, that is to say I'm not religious in the slightest.

Easter/Xmas etc for me are a time for family and friends but there is certainly nothing more there for me.

If St George's Day were a national holiday, fair enough, I'd be glad to have a day off. Having said that, I don't believe that many people do genuinely want a day off so that they can be free to express their love for their country... we're just all looking for a day off work... right? :P

its a good point that not many people celebrate st georges day now, but i tend to disagree that many people dont wana express their love for their country. whenever England play football, many millions of English people join in. how many of us wave a st george flag, buy a newspaper so we can wear a st george cross hat or sticker. how many of us dont celebrate st georges day because its considered racist. last year i wasnt celebrating st georges day, but was in a pub on april 23rd (dint even know it was st georges day :( ) and someone questioned my birthright describing it as racist to others. thats the attitude that English people have been forced to accept in their own country, and its very sad.

Exactamundo. I don't think there'd be much flag-waving etc. Who is anyone trying to kid? We're due a couple of bank holidays as most of Europe has bank holidays for the patron saints of dungarees or rich tea biscuits, or whatever.

Let's not pin it all on St.George. Let's just get up, have our Danish bacon sarnies, get in our Japanese cars, drive to the Swedish flat-pack furniture outlet for the day, enjoy a McDonalds for lunch, come home and watch Neighbours, then go to the pub for some Belgian beer, and finish the night off with a chicken bhuna and keema pilau.

Normal English bank holiday.

Not that I'm too bothered about George, but doesn't that in someway describe Englishness. :P

:D that would be the extreme version, and would be the perfect argument against the English/Englishness being racist. how about porridge for breckers a bike ride or jog in Englands green and pleasant countryside followed by roast beef yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes gwavy carrots and cabbage hmm mouths watering now :D then nip down tut george tavern for an English pint of sommerset cider, watch England win the world cup (oh alright, cricket team replay of the ashes  ) after a jolly good sing song of jerusalem *and in this greeeeeen, and pleasant land...* :) and *swing low, sweet chariot* then onwards back to our castle to make a lovely ham and tomato sandwich and glass of water.

beats that foreign malarky.

you dont have to wave a flag, just campaign for what the rest of europe have, and why not make it an English bank holiday, this is England afterall :)
