If I want to celebrate my nationality I'm not celebrating the fact that an Albanian killed a mythical beast.

I was over in Australia and I was asked "Are you proud to be an American" and I was like, "I don't know. I didn't have a lot to do with it, you know. My parents focked there, that's about all. You know, I was in the spirit realm at that time. "fock in Paris! fock in Paris!" but they couldn't hear me, cos I didn't have a mouth. I was a spirit without lungs or a mouth or vocal cords. "They focked here. Ok, I'm proud. I hate patriotism. I can't stand it, man. Makes me **** sick. It's a round world last time I checked, OK? You know what I mean? I hate patriotism. In fact, that's how we could stop patriotism. I think. Instead of putting stars and stripes on our flags, we should put pictures of our parents ****. Gather people round that flag and see you dad hunched over your mum's big four-by-four butt. See if any boot rally mentality can circle round that little **** image. God... damn, I'm out of here! fock it! Get your mum, shut up! Let's go garden.

I strongly disagree with national pride

Napolean, Hitler, Mussolini, Goerge Bush Junior and others. I like and love my country but I do not have to wear that on my sleeve. ;):thumbup:

If not a St Georges day, at least a George Best day :P

So instead of an Albanian, an Irishman. :blink::ermm::( <_<

Yet many people wear their football club colours with immense pride. And we wear em when the club has bad or even awful managers, just like the countries really.

Many people like something to rally round, be it a club, a country, a religion, a bloomin maypole. Gives them a sense of belonging, a purpose, something to look forward to.

It's more animate than watching TV... or listening to Barber on the radio.

Take the holiday I say. Don't knock anything that promises a good time (for free!) :)

That's how I treat the majority of bank holls - I take the 'free' day but as most are based on religion they really mean fúck all to me

I am all for pride but not for triumphalism. ;):thumbup:

triumphalism

Triumphalism is the attitude or belief that a particular doctrine, culture, or social system â€â€particularly a religious or political oneâ€â€is superior and that it will or should triumph over all others. The term is occasionally used to refer to excessively demonstrative glee or gloating at the defeat or failure of a rival. Triumphalism is not an articulated doctrine.

Humans exhibit triumphalism in its innocuous recreational forms as collective pride (as in school spirit) or in joyful sports fanaticism (“We’re Number One!â€Â).

In its more consequential forms, triumphalism is spoken of as a danger both to the group that holds triumphalist beliefs and to the groups that must deal with them.

Triumphalism can be enjoyable for those who hold the attitude or belief. For example, people with an extreme sense of patriotism may experience comfort, security, pride, and even virtue in their sense of superiority and inevitable ascendancy. However, the dangers of triumphalism to one’s own group include:

* Impaired ability to judge the value or morality of the group's actions ("If we're doing it, it must not be wrong.");

* Cessation of creativity and innovation within the group ("We're the best, so we need to stay exactly the way we are and must not change.");

* Blindness to other groups’ strengths and innovations ("We need not attend to other groups, because we have nothing to learn from them.");

* Inattention to internal weaknesses and to changing circumstances that affect the welfare of the group, perhaps due to psychological denial or to a false sense of security, control, or invulnerability; and

* A tendency to over-reach against the group’s competitors, based on an inflated sense of the likelihood of triumph in conflict.

The dangers of triumphalism to other groups include:

* Attempts at domination or silencing of other groups; and

* Damage to shared resources inflicted by groups that do not perceive other groups’ interests to be as valid or legitimate as their own.
