We never really clear the decks, who was the last defender we sold for any money that wasn’t first choice? It’s either a big sale à la Maguire or Fofana or leave on a free like Soyuncu, Benkovic, Evans, Amartey. 
 

We just never shift players we don’t want so we’re stuck with rotten players until their contracts expire. Overpaying for potentially 3 relegations in 4 seasons  - it is laughable.
