Chimp Posted 1 January 2006 Posted 1 January 2006 Anyone remember when Bryan Robson was manager of Blackburn (was it?) and they were struggling? The board brought in Terry Venables as a kind of 'mentor' for Robson? It saved them from relegation. Would this be a possible solution for City? Bring in an experienced manager to help steer things back on course? There's quite a few candidates out there... Venables himself, Bobby Robson or possibly the great Martin O'Niell plus several others who might bite? If the situation is that CL is unable to turn things around and unwilling to walk and the board cannot afford to sack him the it may be a possible lifeline for us? I'm not clutching at straws here trying to find a way to keep CL in his job as an appointment like this may well be the kind of thing that forces CL to resign, after all, he got shot of Bassett quick enough as he obviously didn't want anyone intefering with his policies and decisions. Maybe the board could impose it on CL and say like it or lump it. It's just something that I've not seen mentioned or discussed on these forums yet. What do you think? Would it work?
The People's Hero Posted 1 January 2006 Posted 1 January 2006 I expect Levein is too proud and stubborn to accept that kind of situation.
Louise Posted 1 January 2006 Posted 1 January 2006 I don't think it would work as Levein has shown before that he likes to do things by himself. One of the reasons he left Hearts was because their new owner wanted a more continental system with coaches and a Director of Football. When he came here Bassett left days later. If the board wanted to force Levein out (which would no doubt delight some on here) appointing a mentor would be the right way to go about it.
The People's Hero Posted 1 January 2006 Posted 1 January 2006 The way to get Levein out is to chant.. 'Sack The Board' Traditionally, that has jolted many a board in to action.
breadandcheese Posted 1 January 2006 Posted 1 January 2006 Don't think a mentor situation works. Can't ever recall a situation where it has proved a success. It's just another (usually large) wage on the bill. I still back Levein, but if the board decide a change is necessary, then I would hope they make a clear change rather than muddy the water with a mentor/director of football or something like that.
Ultra Posted 1 January 2006 Posted 1 January 2006 It worked at Boro, but only for half a season. Having Bassett as a mentor to Micky Adams didn't keep us in the Premiership! In any case, it's a non starter as Leveinio has said he doesn't want one, and it would incur extra expense which could better be spent elsewhere (eg on new players). Best just to get rid, and then bring in a replacement who knows what it takes to get results in this league!
