Who will the new manager be?

I think Bassett might be made the manager permanently. It's the cheap option for the board as he's already here and we all know that the board will spend as little as possible.

I can't see him staying permanently, unless he has a terrific start as manager and wins 5+ games on the trot and takes us near the top of the league. He just isn't a long term solution, and I think the club recognise that a new fresh face is needed.

After careful consideration, I have drawn up my shortlist for who I think are the best candidates.

Mike Newell - Has worked wonders at Luton

Dave Penny - Don't know too much about him, but trust the judgement of Scowy, Petrescu and co, when they say he is an excellent choice. Seems his record speaks for itself.

Terry Butcher - Always felt he did alright at Motherwell, and brought through a youngish team, with the likes of McFadden. Bit worried about the style of football he likes to play

Martin Allen - Did well at Barnet, doing well at Brentford. Very passionate manager

Tony Adams - Perhaps too early for him, but I think he could be a decent manager in a few years, as he always talks to the players, and challenges them in a similar way to Wenger

Paul Fairclough - The Barnet manager. They're top of the conference, having demolished second placed Dagenham 5-0 without their top scorer. Wouldn't have chosen him except for something a friend told me about his approach. After winning 5-0, he sat the players down on Monday and asked them to name two positives from the match and one negative thing that they want to concentrate on not doing again. This approach of engaging the players, and challenging them to think could be just what we need. It's plain good man-management. That added to the fact that Fairclough actually likes to pass a ball and whip crosses in from the wing, helps him onto my possible list of candidates. Also manages England at amateur level, and has links to Arsenal having coached there for a while (possible players on loan from them).

To brighter days and the appointment of a good manager.

p.s. Wilkinson should be asked to leave with Bassett as soon as a new manager comes in. I do not see what purpose they serve, other than an extra expense on the wage bill that we can ill afford.
