Not quite got their facts correct?

Wesolowski makes grade at Leicester

07feb06

TEENAGER James Wesolowski became the latest Aussie to break into English soccer at the weekend, making a solid full debut for Leicester City.

The 18-year-old, sent on as substitute last week for Scottish international Gareth Williams in a 3-2 win in the Championship against Queen's Park Rangers, did well enough to be named in the starting line-up at the weekend. Wesolowski, who played for the Young Socceroos in the under-20 World Cup in the Netherlands last year, played a part in an important 1-0 win against Wolverhampton, which helped lift Leicester out of the relegation zone.

Patrick Kisnorbo, who has become a fixture for Leicester, was inspirational with some desperate defending late in the game.

Kisnorbo's form has brought him back in the frame for Socceroos selection. It will be interesting to see if Leicester will release him for Australia's Asian Cup qualifier against Bahrain in Manama on February 22, which it is not compelled to do.

Elsewhere, Australians had a tough weekend at the office in England and Italy.

Socceroos skipper Mark Viduka was substituted at halftime as Middlesbrough drifted closer to the bottom three following a 4-0 Premier League drubbing from Aston Villa at home, with Australia keeper Mark Schwarzer the man to pick the ball out of the net.

In Italy's Serie A, Vince Grella and Marco Bresciano are back in relegation bother after Parma lost 3-0 to Roma at home. Both Aussies played well, with Grella setting up one chance and Bresciano coming close with a shot that forced Roma keeper Alexander Doni into a good save.

But Roma dominated the second half and scored three second-half goals for its seventh successive win.

Parma now sits fourth last.

In the Netherlands, Archie Thompson made another cameo appearance for PSV Eindhoven, coming on in stoppage time as Guus Hiddink's side came from two goals down to beat Roda 3-2.

Jason Culina was in PSV's starting side and set up the second goal with a free kick, hammered home by Jan Vennegoor.

Back in England, Tim Cahill performed strongly as Everton's revival gathered steam with a 1-0 win against Manchester City. The club has now gone six games undefeated in the Premier League.

The Socceroos midfielder played a part in the winning goal, but it was not something he'll be bragging about.

Cahill mistimed his header from a corner kick, with the ball grazing his shoulder as it bounced awkwardly for City defender Richard Dunne.

Dunne could only nod the ball into the knee of David Weir and watch helplessly as it ricocheted into the goal.

I don't see why not, they aren't exactly awash with talent. Might be worth taking along some young players to get a bit of experience for next time round. Depends whether Huddink is bothered about next time or not!!

Just some info on Aussies

Weso may get his chance sooner than expected because we are lacking in holding midfielders, in fact our second best CM plays for Bristol City.

There is quite a bit of hype about Weso, he and a young bloke called Kaz Patafta who is trialling with Benfica will probably rival each other for the holding mid spot at the next Olympics.

Here is an article on Kisnorbo from todays paper.

Kisnorbo in line for Socceroo call-up

Defender Patrick Kisnorbo could be back playing for the Socceroos.

FORMER South Melbourne defender Patrick Kisnorbo looks set to come back in from the Socceroo wilderness for Australia's Asian Cup qualifier against Bahrain later this month.

The 24-year-old, who is in his second season with English Championship team Leicester City, is one of several fresh faces expected to be given the chance to impress against the Gulf state in the first meeting between the two nations in Manama on February 22.

Kisnorbo has not played for Australia since he was sent off playing against the Solomon Islands in a World Cup qualifier in Adelaide in June 2004, a match in which the Solomons went on to force a draw with 10-man Australia.

Shortly afterwards Kisnorbo opted not to join the Australian under-23 Olympic squad for a training camp in Switzerland ahead of the Athens Games, instead returning to his then club, Scottish Premier League team Heart of Midlothian for treatment.

He was subsequently left out of the Olympic team.

But with the absence of several key players due to Champions League and UEFA Cup commitments, players such as Kisnorbo, Romania-based defender Jon McKain and new boy Scott McDonald of Scottish Premier League club Motherwell, will get called up as the Socceroos coaching staff seeks to examine the depth in its ranks.

Several more established Socceroos, such as midfielder Josip Skoko and winger Ahmad Elrich, will get the chance to pull on the green and gold and play a full game. They are currently being starved of match opportunities at their Premier League clubs, Wigan and Fulham respectively.

Other players who have been tipped as potential choices include Dutch-based Olyroo striker Brett Holman and former Carlton forward Josh Kennedy, who is set to move to Bundesliga club Nuremburg from Dynamo Dresden in the German second division.

Several A-League players have played well enough to push their names forward, but their club's participation in the finals series could compromise their prospects.

Perth's experienced Socceroo midfielder Simon Colosimo is desperate to make the World Cup squad, but his prospects have been hit by the collapse of his proposed move to a Greek first division club.

The Bahrain game is one of the few competitive opportunities players will have to impress coach Guus Hiddink and his assistants, Graham Arnold and Johan Neeskens, before the World Cup squad is settled.

Gwan Kis!
