Louise Posted 25 October 2004 Posted 25 October 2004 Gemmill is keeping his fingers crossed for longer stay at CityBy Jon Dale Scot Gemmill hopes he has done enough to earn himself a new deal at Leicester City. The former Scottish international midfielder's three-month contract expires on Sunday and he is due to meet club officials this week to discuss his position and the options available. After being brought to the club in the summer from Everton by ex-manager Micky Adams, the 33-year-old secured himself a short-term deal after proving his worth in pre-season. But his chances to impress have since been limited and Saturday was the first time he has played 90 minutes in a City shirt. He said: "I would be lying if I said it wasn't in the back of my mind that I had to get a full game under my belt. "I did tire towards the end but I am glad the manager left me on because I did need the work-out particularly because of my personal situation. "My contract runs out on October 31 but all I can do is be patient and see what happens this week. "I understand it's a difficult time for the club with the manager's position up for grabs as well.'' However, if former Nottingham Forest star Gemmill was to be offered a new contract at the Walkers Stadium, he would have no hesitation in putting pen to paper. "I'd love to stay here,'' he said. "I have been described as a veteran in certain quarters but I am 33 and still feel great and want to play. "It actually scares the hell out of me that I might not have a club to play for come next weekend.'' Since caretaker-boss Dave Bassett and temporary first-team coach Howard Wilkinson moved into the hot-seats, City have drawn their last three matches. But Gemmill believed the side did enough on Saturday to warrant all three points against Stoke. He said: "We should have won the game in the first 30 minutes but we didn't and paid the price for that. "When you are as dominant as we were early on, you have got to score goals and put the game beyond reach. "We passed the ball around at a high tempo in the first half-an-hour and that's why we did well but, not wanting to use it as an excuse, the conditions after the break were not conducive to good football. "But we can take a lot of positives out of the game and, if we can play for longer spells like we did early on, we know we can win games, starting at Cardiff at the weekend.'' link

Cos i feel he's just getting to match fitness and he's starting to impress me
Anish Posted 25 October 2004 Posted 25 October 2004 I didn't realise that his contract ends on Sunday. I would be surprised if he was released, because it appears that Bassett likes him. Gemmill has started 2 of the 3 games that Bassett has managed, and only missed the other through injury.
Ash Posted 25 October 2004 Posted 25 October 2004 Yeah, he's twice as good as Williams. 28892[/snapback] I still feel Williams is a better player than Nalis , but Nalis is decent

"But keeping him a bit longer gives him the opportunity to impress any new manager who might come in.'' link

It does seem a bit unfair on Gemmill that we are stringing him along for another month, but then I'm sure he won't be complaining cos at least he has a club for the time being.
