Scarby Posted 31 October 2004 Posted 31 October 2004 you might find this silly but isnt there so much a gaffer can do! Apart from motviation there isnt much else. People say he is a great manager but at the the end of the day surely it is up the players to preform to there best! i mean say if Fergie (a great manager as much as we hate to admit it) had shit players he couldnt had done what he has done. And likewise a manager with no experience if he had the 'best' players in the world surely he could get results! im sure i will get ripped apart on this one..but people say CL (and MA etc) were/are fantastic young managers..but what have they got that others havent. Does anyone know where i am coming from on this one?

My view/vision for what it's worth is, in the short term in our situation, i.e. an under performing aging team, with perhaps some youth potential one would hope that Levein has the ability to get more from the under performing players and to develop a better blend of youth and experience. Levein has demonstrated that he can do this at both Cowdenbeath and Hearts. In the longer term with a reduced wage bill and a clearing of the decks he will need to put together a squad were the emphasis is on commitment and teamwork, with a sprinkling of 'talented' players (much like MON). That's is the only way teams like ours can compete in the premiership, we are never going to 'out perform' the likes of the Arse and Manure (they sit well together) we just can't afford a squad of 20 of the most talented players. I hope that's where Levein's strengths are, that's exactly what he's done at Hearts. On the down side like Hearts it wont be the prettiest football, but then neither was MONs, he will also, like MON when he's achieved that , taken us as far as we can go move on again just like MON. That's our future, we cannot hope for more at least not whilst we have the league set up and the cash distribution we currently have in the Premier League.

It is not all on the pitch. i dont know what happened backstage after all im only a mere supporter! all i can say is that MON gained the players respect. PT if you remember got us to the top of the league MA was everyones best friend when we got promoted! all im saying what qualities do you need to be a good manager
MON Posted 31 October 2004 Posted 31 October 2004 but Ferguson developed those players, he got a good academy up and running signed players on the cheap like cantona. Then he started to sign the big name players when he had the money. It was beacuse of him that manu are so big now, same can be said of Wenger and MON. Some nanagers do shit with a poor squad, E.G. Glen Roeder, Peter Taylor.
Alexikokopops Posted 31 October 2004 Posted 31 October 2004 Arsene Wenger bought Henry as a struggling left winger and turned him into the best striker in the world. That's not a bad attribute to have. He's done a similar thing with Kolo Toure, buying him as a central midfielder and turning him into a classy defender. He also bought Viera on the cheap fom AC Milan, and look what he's become. So, yunno, spotting players with potential and nuturing them in class acts is always a good skill for a manager to have.

Alexikokopops Posted 31 October 2004 Posted 31 October 2004 AH yeah good point, whoops. Well, he still nutures them. And a manager will still go and watch a player, albeit on the recommendation of a scout, and end up making the final decision. Not always, but sometimes.

Never knew that, always had the idea that Vieira was signed by Wenger up until a few weeks ago when I read it somewhere.

Well, I was close, he effectively with that pre-condition.
