im going to see anti flag next week in brum, one of my faves bands, just wondering if anyones heard of them and what they think. for those who havent they are knig of sing a long punk rock, with very stong political lyrics.

tom morrello, ex rage against the machine guitarist claims they are the most politically important band in the world right now

Know the name, haven't heard them yet. Wouldn't mind seeing some of their lyrics? Are they playing The Academy?

Posted

They are appearing on Kerrang! and/or Scuzz occasionally

Don't dislike them - but they're not the first thing I'd grab to listen to

Politically, they're children. Their political lyrics are about as mature and inspirational as me going "lol, Bush is smelly!" to a drum machine and sample. They're only "politically important" because a lot of 13 year olds listen to their music and it weens them onto more intelligent, political music.

All of this said - I do really like their music, do have tickets for the Brum concert and will be yelling my lungs out to Die For The Government. :D

Politically we're all children. It's just that some of us get to serve dinners at the top table. No one has yet invented a political system that is fair, non-corrupt and offers everyone an equal chance. I'd rather 13 year olds listen to "Bush is smelly" style lyrics than the ususal clap they're fed, buy my product, be like me, let the machine devour you..

I first heard of Anti Flag with the excellent 911 for peace just after sept 11 and have enjoyed their albums they are a very political band but why did they sign to a major record label who will insist on censoring such things as lyrics and artwork surely that would be against everything they stand for?

Posted

yer i would of thought that aswell but their new album, although very musically different from older albums such as die for the government i still think the message is the same and that whatever major label they are on havent sensored anything, infact actually helping them expand musically.

although saying this most bands so start to suck when they sign to a big label, hopefully in this case i am proven otherwise

I've got one Anti Flag album 'terror state' I much prefer Leftover Crack for the political lyric, but they are a bit too neo liberal. Sounds like they just like to cause trouble for the sake of it.

What's Neo Liberal in English?

Posted

Heh, I'm not even going to go into my understanding of it. You could well make me look very stupid. I probably do that anyway, but what I meant was the portrayal of unnecessary violence with songs like 'burn the prisons'

I know Neo Liberalism is not about violence but you know what I'm getting at, they still hold neo liberal views.

Leftover Crack are **** amazing, boyo. Got Mediocre... and FWT, quality albums lad. Good shzizle mo nizzle. But they're still not politically that sound. You don't have to go "underground" (which leftover crack aren't really) to find good politics. The like of Bad Religion have had teir head screwed on for decades and still know here it's at and RATM were doing it far more hardcore years ago.

If you want ar eally, genuinely, FANTASTIC, political song though - you should check out The Tossers. They've a fantastic tune on an album I've got called long dim road, called The Ballad of N.A.T.>O. which is wonderful to listen to. It#'s just one man going on a lyrical TIRADE with his mandolin in hand and it brings a tear to my eye every tume! ;)

Le Tigre are another fantastic fem-political, electro-post-punk outfit worth a listen if you want something really in-yo'-face style politics. They've some mad, crazy tunes I'd recomend to ANYONE like TKO, Deceptacon and The The Empty but they've also got their really, genuienkly political stuff like 'New Kicks'. Anyway boys, it's bedtime for Sosban Fach - g'night to you all geezers!

you do realise that leftover crack come from squats around new york and all have severe drug problems. thats pretty underground to me.

thats true living what your writing about in your music. unlike ponces like pete doherty who is an attention seeking little ***

I **** hate Pete Doherty and you do not have to tell me Leftover Cracks (for some reason my apostrophe key is not working) background. However, theyve very much "risen" from the underground and are actually a globally, quite well-known band nowadays.

Posted

yer they are pretty well known these days, im hoping that their gunna be playing the lock up stage at leeds this year, if not at least their playing the shed in august. you going?

Posted

... What... the... fock!? I've just double-checked and you're not joking, they really are playing the Shed! lol! That's amazing. Hell yeah I'll go.

Posted

yer they always seem to play there and not the charlotte for some reason.

you into any other new york punk bands, such as morning glory, indk etc? all real good bands

Posted

Not especially, to be really honest. Favourite NY band at the moment aren't even punk, man, Le Tigre! I'm not really the world's biggest punk fan.

I'm probably more confused now!

Posted

i wouldnt say neo liberalism. songs like 'burn them prisons' just portray their anger towards the u.s prison system, which lets be fair if its anything like ours is a joke

with songs also like 'one dead cop' i dont think they mean things literally but just lyrically showing anger, i duno

Posted

Politically they're just angry, pseudo-anarchist boyos really. I'm not really totally into their politics, to be honest. Good music, though. Burn Them Prisons and Gang Control are fantastic songs.

Nazi White Trash is a focking CH00N.
