Knighton Matt Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Is it out of control in Britain today? Another day, another shocking story... A 21-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a student on a train in Cumbria.Thomas Grant, 19, from Gloucester, was stabbed to death on a Virgin train has it travelled from Glasgow to Paignton on Saturday. The man was arrested a short distance from Oxenholme Station in Cumbria. British Transport Police said he comes from Skelmersdale in West Lancashire but have not released his name. He will appear in court in Kendal on Monday. It is believed Mr Grant became involved in an argument with another passenger sitting in the carriage. He was stabbed in the chest and died at the scene. Is it a cause for concern and if so what can be done to solve the problem? Are 5 year sentences for carrying knives needed?
Ultra Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Dreadful though this crime was, it's thankfully still quite rare. Although I wouldn't disagree with the idea of heavier sentences for those carrying knives, we should be wary of media scaremongering campaigns which may raise people's fears of attack and therefore do more harm than good.

Very sensible words.
davieG Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 It's just the current vogue of crime they are interested in, these things are happening all the time, however a single incident, be it knives, guns, rape, paedophiles, prisoners escaping, illegal immigrants, drugs, etc, etc can set them off. It's just lazy reporting. most of the time the media couldn't give a toss. They're like vultures on a piece of prey all trying to get in first.

It's true, if we were to believe the media, knife crime didn't exist until a couple of weeks ago. Once something has the media focus on it it becomes magnified and seems as though it is the worse crime in the country

Just as carrying a knife might be seen as "fashionable" in certain circles, then currently it is fashionable to report about it at the moment.
Thracian Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 It's often political stage management as well. When a Government wants to introduce new legislation it gets its media friends to focus on specific crimes. It happened before the dangerous dogs legislation if you remember. All of a sudden there was hardly a day went by without picture stories relating to savage dogs tearing people's faces apart and now how often do you see such stories...no more than occasionally. It happened with gun crime and now it's happening with knives. The problem with any of these campaigns is that the legislation also adversely affects perfectly innocent people in their enjoyment of a hobby/interest. And why should they be victims just because the authorities refuse to deal properly with criminals from the outset?.
Hitesh Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 I saw the video of a knife attack on the news and its absolutly horrific! Iv seen people with knives when im out and its really worrying! I cant beleive some people get a rush from it. Im trying to be more aware when im out, espeically being in a big city, and you never know whats round the corner. Its worrying and whats worse is that peoples trust in each other will go down and it makes people feel on edge. Its not right! But its good to see something is being done about it before it gets any worse!
