Everton secured a fifth away win of the season with a 1-0 win at Birmingham.

Muzzey Izzet provided the turning point of the match when he punched Thomas Gravesen's shot off the line, to earn himself a red card and Everton a penalty.

Gravesen stepped up to put away the spot kick to take three points from a largely scrappy encounter at St Andrews.

Izzet almost provided an early breakthrough for Birmingham but Emile Heskey was just inches away from converting his centre from the right.

The former Leicester man then had a free header from Jesper Gronkjaer's cross, but could only find Nigel Martyn with his effort.

Maik Taylor fumbled Gravesen's free kick on the half hour, but the Northern Ireland keeper recovered to grab the ball at the second attempt.

Taylor was again at fault when he came and dropped a corner, and Leon Osman's shot was blocked in the ensuing scramble inside the Birmingham box.

Robbie Savage fired in a dangerous free kick five minutes after the break, but the ball was cleared by an Everton head.

Another Savage free kick hit the ball as Blues pushed forward and Everton sat back and were forced to defend deep.

Heskey spurned another chance on 65 minutes when he brought down a long ball and out-muscled David Weir before firing his left-footed effort well over the bar.

Tim Cahill's header took a wicked deflection off Mario Melchiot and forced Taylor to scramble the ball behind for a corner.

The turning point came from the resulting set piece, as Gravesen's shot was remarkably punched off the line by Izzet.

Izzet had handled off the line in Blues' last match at Anfield, but this time his indiscretion could not be missed, and he was sent off by Rob Styles, although the ball may not have even been going in.

Gravesen coolly stepped up and sent Taylor the wrong way to break the deadlock, largely against the run of play.

Heskey could have given the ten-men a lifeline on 72 minutes when he headed Gronkjaer's corner goalwards, but Tony Hibbert was on hand to clear off the line.

Osman fizzed a shot just wide as Everton broke free when Blues were desperately searching for an equaliser.

Substitute Dwight Yorke missed a glorious late chance when slipped in by Savage, but the former Manchester United man opted for power and blazed his close range effort over the bar.

Moyes' men hung on for yet another away victory to keep up their fine start to the season while Bruce's troops remain in trouble.

Exactly - if he can't catch, at least he can punch...unlike Pressman. :(

I went to the bar to grab a bite to eat, and caught the last half-hour of the Everton Birmingham match, and it was quite funny when Muzzy just decided to jump up and punch the ball away.

Although it would have been worth it maybe if Graveson had missed the penalty.
