Thracian Posted 9 July 2006 Posted 9 July 2006 In a way I feel like the kid who's discovered there's no Santa Claus. What with the corruption scandal in Italy, the cynical and endless cheating at the World Cup, the simmering bungs scandal in Britain, allegations about match fixing and the latest revelation about betting on matches by players am I the only one who is starting to get disillusioned with football?. Or, more accurately, the public rape of the game by players, officials and associates for whom no amount of money will ever be enough and who would doubtless sell their mother's to the Nazi's given the chance and a few easy bucks. No-one has the will to deal with the problems, or they don't want to stir up a hornets nest which ends up getting themselves and lots of others stung. Then again, I suppose a football forum is not the place to ask a question about disillusionment. But, for the first time in 50 years, I am seriously thinking about getting away from football if that proves to be possible without the sort of withdrawal symptoms associated with giving up smoking. Trouble is, as I don't fancy 5-hour golf rounds at weekends nor the prospect of walking up and down a bowls rink like a punch-drunk zombie, the question is, what does a guy turn to at 57 that promises an appeth of excitement at anything like a reasonable price?.

The People's Hero Posted 9 July 2006 Posted 9 July 2006 I'm going to be trying bowls soon! And I'm only 22!
Thracian Posted 9 July 2006 Author Posted 9 July 2006 I'm going to be trying bowls soon! And I'm only 22! That was about when I last tried it!
Daggers Posted 9 July 2006 Posted 9 July 2006 the question is, what does a guy turn to at 57 that promises an appeth of excitement at anything like a reasonable price?. Gary Charles seems to be finding a new lease of life outside of football through a combination of cheap corner shop booze and assaulting young ladies at bus shelters. Not my cup of tea mind you, but it works for him. I hear the world of pro-celebrity Top Trumps is quite exciting, maybe you could give that a try?
Thracian Posted 9 July 2006 Author Posted 9 July 2006 Nothing at all against the corner shop booze but trying to assault young women at bus stops would probably leave me more intimidated than them, and, besides, I find it hard even to argue with women let alone do them harm. No idea about the Top Trumps but someone mentioned online roulette and poker. I might just try that although a late bet on the roulette almost cost me my marriage once. Even though it won the bet covered just about every penny we had at the time and, although my wife was with me, I neglected to mention it until the wheel had stopped and she'd returned from getting her coat. Seeing we were £500 down when she went to fetch the coat and were able to treat ourselves to a holiday when she came back, you might have thought she'd be happy!!! Is there any pleasing women?.
macbeth Posted 9 July 2006 Posted 9 July 2006 sea angling and learning to fly private light aircraft have been biggest buzzes for me; but the latter got too expesive some time back and the former seems to be suffering from loss of fish stocks ..........around the area of the solent anyway
Guest Posted 9 July 2006 Posted 9 July 2006 After the last few seasons watching City, you can't get more exciting than thumb-twiddling.
Thracian Posted 9 July 2006 Author Posted 9 July 2006 I quite fancy sea angling and am off to Poole soon so I might get the chance. Nearest I got before that was taking part in the Brixham Trawler Race but that was simply about finishing whatever beer stocks you took onto the boat before the end of the race than about fishing. Anything you didn't drink belonged to the4 skipper!

macbeth Posted 11 July 2006 Posted 11 July 2006 So, how about flying fish or angling for planes then? for once i was trying to be serious well i 've been catching buses and trains for a while now so maybe i'll have a go at catching planes....where would be a good plaice to start? as for flying fish that may take a little time to build up to ..........should i learn on skates to get used to the speed ? ; didn't "j. r. (jammy) hartley" start a similar craze some years back?
Daggers Posted 11 July 2006 Posted 11 July 2006 well i 've been catching buses and trains for a while now so maybe i'll have a go at catching planes....where would be a good plaice to start? as for flying fish that may take a little time to build up to ..........should i learn on skates to get used to the speed ? ; Looks like you're stuck between a rock and a hard plaice...but, if you feel like the only budgie on a perch you could always grow a mullet. Look at me, carping on again with no porpoise! I'll not flounder for words anymore, just grab your musket and pike and go off medieval re-enacting ~ that will bring joy to your sole. Maybe you could grab your double bass... well, only if you can hold a good tuna.

Alchohol and loose women.
Thracian Posted 14 July 2006 Author Posted 14 July 2006 Thanks Chimp!!!! I'm feeling better already. Mind you, after the alcohol I doubt I'll be much use to the loose women! Perhaps I'll just have to dress the wife up in a stockings, suspenders and a mini-skirt... That'll make me glad I had the alcohol first...
