Why Cant We Play This Formation?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

The first home game of the season and I could not describe how excited I was as I counted the hours down to kick-off and really thought that we would instantly bounce back from the 2-0 loss at Luton on Saturday.

It turns out that Burnley do us again, down the Walkers, 1-0 and our team played poorly with no urgency, no clear cut chances, and just no width. So, as me and my dad finish of a superb curry in our local indian restaraunt that night reflecting on the defeat, I question why we cant play the 4-3-1-2 formation. I said that the only problem with it is it provides no width, however, there is no width at the club.

After explaining it to him for 10 minutes, he finally got it and heres the formation as follows;

---------------------Henderson-----------------------

Stearman---Kisnorbo---McCarthy---Nisse/Kenton

----Williams---------Johnson--------Hughes--------

-----------------------Hume---------------------------

--------O'Grady--------------------Fryatt-------------

My dad then said I should get some badges. :rolleyes:

Anyway, I question to you all why we cant/shouldnt play this formation and why.

Thanks again all and please discuss. James.

I like the personnel but one of our main problems is the lack of width and the above formation wouldn't do anything to address that (in fact we'd probably end up even narrower than we already are)

<------------- Width-------------------------------->

No specialist wide players and not enough positions representing potential goals. Therefore too easy to combat.

We already lack width and are getting outnumbered in midfield that formation will just make it worse.

Fairly comprehensively answered I'd say :P

Still not a bad side in terms of personnel though....

Well were in the crap then because we dont have any sufficient wide players at our club....

So what do we do..?? :huh:

I'd play Josh Low right wing and Levi Porter left wing.

Currently they are the best two players in their positions - forgetting all this square pegs in round holes thing.

Right OK well why cant Rob Kelly play them two instead of Maybury (who is actually a right back) and Danny Tiatto (who, well, I dont think will ever have a good/very good game for us ever again)??

I hope he doesnt do a Levein and stick by his mistakes - because we all know what happened to him..

You don't need the greatest personnel though if the tactics are right. This was what Martin O Neill did right at this club. You do however need wingers playing on the wing.

I say we adopt a flat 4-4-2 as following:

Henderson

Maybury------Kisnorbo------McCarthy-----Johansson

Low-----------Williams-------Johnson-------Sheehan/Porter

----------------Hume---------Fryatt

Lets keep the ball on the floor for a change as well please lads, and try to string a few passes together. Important thing to remember is if we've got the ball.......they ain't scoring!

I think we'd all like the answer to this particular question :thumbup:

1) I think you are confusing an inanimate internet forum for Rob Kelly.

2) Still don't think 4-4-2 or 4-3-1-2 fit our personnel. You've still got to find a disciplined, reliable left-back from somewhere. In a 4-3-1-2, the midfield would probably get stretched and end up resembling a 4-4-2 anyway.

3) Even though I'd prefer a 3-5-2, it doesn't really matter what formation you play if you can't pass, shoot, cross, dribble, mark anybody at set pieces etc etc
