Collymore Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 Any recommendations? I've been doing a bit of 'cathederal city' recently because it's been buy 1 get one free in my local Super Market.. The packaging says "Mature yet Mellow" it's nice, but It doesn't seem to have the the X-factor. I've tried Tescos and Morrinsons' finest, but they either don't behave under the grill, or are just disappointing Anyone got any tips for a great all round cheddar? I will buy it next time I'm shopping.
lookwhaticando Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 Try ciao.co.uk They have a comparative price chart for many mainstream cheddar cheeses, as well as consumer ratings for each (assuming people have voted) Cathederal City scores quite highly and has a more votes than most. That might, sadly, be as good as it gets. If you want an X-factor, try a local shop rather than a supermarket.
stez Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 apart from red leicester, which is bar, my favorite cheese is good old double gloucester; its a good all-rounder, behaving well under the grill and twixt two slices of bread. it goes perfectly with cucumber, or tomato sauce or pickle and also makes the perfect ploughmans. double gloucester = perfect regarding what LWICD said re supermarkets, i find they have quite a good range of unusual cheeses in small enough chunks not to annoy you for buying it, if you don't like it..........

You pay more for them but they are leagues ahead of the supermarkets.
Daggers Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 I always ask to sample the cheeses at the counter ~ because I am a great fat pig. My current block of choice is the Seriously Strong Cheddar.

stez Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 what counties are those? Double Gloucester , Derby, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cheddar(red leicester usually) also as janx says, british hard cheeses are the best and most numerous in the world!

lookwhaticando Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 Either you have a weak stomach... or you are trying to persuade me that I owe you a holiday?!?! If I'm being honest, I was kinda building up to it.
Alexikokopops Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 That's what she said...(for Alex[ikokopops]) It's all about Mexicana cheese. Cheese with chillis in, on the ticket.
Collymore Posted 15 August 2006 Author Posted 15 August 2006 Some good info there. I think I'm gonna try and find a farmer then.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 I like a good straightforward Mature Davidstow. Cheese is ace.
lcfcalan Posted 15 August 2006 Posted 15 August 2006 I always ask to sample the cheeses at the counter ~ because I am a great fat pig. My current block of choice is the Seriously Strong Cheddar. Yeppers !! Totally agree on this choice. Also if I may suggest a tip , don't eat cheese too cold , ie: straight from the fridge. It kills the flavour a bit. Also one of my favourits is Jarlsberg , not a cheddar but a nice 'nutty ' flavour to it .
