lookwhaticando Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 Eddie Kirkland, father of Chris, placed a bet many years ago that Chris would be capped by England before he was 30. He's done it, and raked in a wad of cash. The family of goalkeeper Chris Kirkland have won close to £10,000 on a bet after he took the field for England in the friendly match against Greece.Eddie Kirkland put on a bet 12 years ago that his son would win an England cap before turning 30. The syndicate can collect their winnings after Leicester-born Kirkland, 25, who is on loan from Liverpool to Wigan, came on in the second half. BBC Sport | Football

davieG Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 I don't think they did it for the money as there is 6 in the syndicate I believe.
lookwhaticando Posted 17 August 2006 Author Posted 17 August 2006 I agree the money isn't a huge amount for a family likely to be quite well off in their own right. What amazes me is the fact that they bet 100-1 on their son becoming an England international. They placed the bet when he was merely 14/15. Imagine the bragging rights they'll have - I placed a bet at 100-1 and won. Top stuff.

My mate placed 10 50p bets on the Champions League final and one of them was Campbell to score first with Barcelona winning 2-1. He cleaned up over £200. So he placed a 500-1 (or something along those lines) bet and won, sweet.

Alexikokopops Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 Jammy bastard. I know!! I was watching the match with my huge Arsenal fan of a friend and the guy who placed the bets, who's a mutual friend, rang my Arsenal friend after the match and was like "Yeah, I know you lost but if it's any consolation I won £250. I'll buy you a pint".

I mean here we have a 25 year old England international and Coventry spotted him before Leicester Do we actually have any decent scouts?
Thracian Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 And a damn good half game he had too! I was just a bit cheesed off he was at the opposite end to my seat.

Random fact: He went to the school in Hinkley which my mum taught at until last month. That is my mum taught there til last month, not Kirkland went there until last month, that would be silly.

Birmingham have been splashing the cash they've raked in. Villa got MON as manager. Coventry have done some decent business. Derby have got a bit of cash. Seriously, are we the only club without any kind of luck right now?
Finnegan Posted 18 August 2006 Posted 18 August 2006 Seriously, are we the only club without any kind of luck right now? Don't worry about it, last I checked, Rothley Imps and Birstall Town were still pretty shite.
