Knighton Matt Posted 22 August 2006 Posted 22 August 2006 Two big no no's for me in terms of etiquette at the table that I have seen countless times in recent weeks when eating out in public... a) Texting at the dinner table. b) Blowing one's nose at the dinner table. Seriously it makes me angry. Common courtesy costs nothing rah!
lookwhaticando Posted 22 August 2006 Posted 22 August 2006 I thought it was going to be elbows on the table and chewing with one's mouth open. Point taken, though. I only text before or after the meal, not during. And I never blow at the table, we have public conveniences for that :laugh:

I've been brought up with politeness (including this daft rule) drilled into me and it's rubbed off, I open doors for everyone, never miss a please or thankyou and will quite happily help your granny across the road. But if you expect me to not rest my elbows on the table when me arms are tired you can feck orf.

Finnegan Posted 22 August 2006 Posted 22 August 2006 I suppose it dates back to the days of large family meals around the table, where putting your elbows out was hogging space. That could be interprated as rude, I suppose. Sat having a meal with your missus though, on the family on a normal sized table, I don't think you can really be considered badly mannered for resting your elbows.

cisono Posted 22 August 2006 Posted 22 August 2006 I've been told off for sniffing strange (new) finger-type food a couple of times (I didn't know what it was made of, or whether it was sweet or savoury). Never understood that: why is it ok to do that during wine tasting but not when food is involved?

I ordered a Japanese meal... left this pudding-looking thing for last. I was soo looking forward to my dessert. I spooned a bit into my mouth and nearly threw it all up! It was savoury. It took lots of persuading my brain that everything was fine, and that it was just egg with some chicken in it! Not going through that again

golden gordon Posted 23 August 2006 Posted 23 August 2006 one day some friends dropped in on us and they stayed for a bit of lunch , and they had brought their dog with them, after the meal one of the guests collected up the scraps on one of our plates and put it down for the dog to eat is this bad manners? they didn't even ask if it was ok

My dad always used to tell us off for talking at the dinner table, which I found was odd, people go for dinner to socialise!!!
