Knighton Matt Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 How important do you feel now mate?! Anyway quick question for you (or any others that can help). Is it safe to put my bank details in an email (i.e. sort code and a/c number). Basically I've got to pay for some stag do stuff then recoup the monies and wondered if it was safe to give the above out so people can do an instant transfer to my a/c via online banking. Cheers!

I wouldn't do it myself tbh. Haven't you got a Paypal account they can use, then they just need to know your email address? That's how I'd do it anyway.

What's the issue...Someone might intercept the email or one of my dopey friends might forward it on by mistake?

Well I work for a building society ( sort of ) and we aren't allowed to E-mail people their own details, so I wouldn't recomend it. Paypal is the way foward.

It's incredibly easy to read other peoples E-mail, they even gave us a quick lesson in how to do it at Uni .

If it's got to be either of those ways then it's better to lose out on the commission than have your bank details floating around the internet.

Fez of Mahrez Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 OK cheers for the advice gents No worries. If you go ahead with it anyway then CC me into the email and I'll take a wedge out your account for consultation fees and split it with Manwell..
JadeFalcon Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 plus the fact that u never know what kinda spyware is on the recipients machine that could be ripping stuff from emails n the like
davieG Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 OK cheers for the advice gents They have set ups that scan all emails for specific sentence/number constructions. So it's dead easy for them to scan your email automatically recognise a sort code and pull it out. You might just as well title your email with sort code & account details enclosed.
Rincewind Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 The person receiving the E-mail could have a PC where other users have access. Don't want to worry anyone but I heard something about old PC's turning up in other countries then a hacker hacking and finding out peoples personal details even if the system was wiped clean. In a demo, this hacker phoned this bloke up and told him he was married, 2 kids a dog named Luke and his bank account no. was 34xxxxxxx (it was bleeped out). My bro explained a couple of reasons why. Each processor chip has a location like 1010101110 etc. When it is cleaned they all revert to 0. But there is still a magnet trace left behind so it is possible to see the 111's. Best way to fight this is to take a hammer to your old PC, but then you cannot donate it to a third world country out of the goodness of your heart. Anyway that was slightly off subject (sorry) Is it a company you have to pay because most have a web facility to go to a secure site. Never knew Paypal charged. Via post is another way. I am always dubious if asked for bank details by email. I'm sure there a way to encrypt a mail though and the recipient unscrambles it at the other end.
