Shum Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Got a PC here, you shut it down (not restart) and the PC totally shuts down. Give it about 10 seconds and it automatically switches itself back on... Anyone ever had this issue?

andrewsnaith Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Cheers mate, it's actually a PC where I work.. Will look into the detials regarding Updates, as we have just introduced a new WSUS server (Windows Update!).. Your company isn't updating everything automatically without testing first is it? Always bad news if that is the case! It could also be down to the power supply itself (usually if it is an old machine). Do you get any errror messages when the machine restarts? If it doesn't then Right click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Settings button (Starup and Recovery), and then "uncheck" Automatically Restart. Now the computer should be able to produce some kind of "error message" - when it happens again - which should give you some clue as to the cause of this happening.

It's only the one pc that is affected. No error messages, will try the details above and see if any error is produced. They are all new machines, IBM think Centres!
JadeFalcon Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 probably a WOL (wake on lan) or WOM (wake on mouse) is turned on in the bios
andrewsnaith Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 never thought of that one! though if its not been doing it since they have had the machine then it would unlikely to be that (unless some rogue employee though it would be funny but even then the bios will likely be locked out in a corporate environment?).
The People's Hero Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Probably software related but I'd start by perhaps replacing or at least removing and putting-back-in the existing power unit. I've done that before (at work) and it sorted the problem... no idea why, but it took about 10 mins and sorted it. If not, just turn it off and whilst it *is* off, rip out the plug!
Daggers Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 If not, just turn it off and whilst it *is* off, rip out the plug! ...but the plug was out... "There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition; and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone."
cisono Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 I had a somewhat reverse problem with an internal modem which would occasionally reboot my PC in the middle of an email or similar. Not nice! (Again, this problems is related to causes that have already been mentioned)

Rincewind Posted 6 September 2006 Posted 6 September 2006 I've had warnings coming up to tell me a programme is closing because of a problem. Sometimes with these things setting the PC to restart from an earlier date works Dont know why though. perhaps you have a running programme that conflicts with the running processors. I'll stick to real ale easier to understand.

Shum - What make and model is it? - I know of one specific PC model that suffers this issue This issue on this particular model is (I believe) due to Bios Wake on Mouse setting and an extremely sensitive optical mouse
