If you then click on the lasso it should change to a white box around it. Right click on it and a drop down box will appear, select tool options. A further box will appear, again click the lasso and a further drop down box will appear, within this you have a choice of freehand, point to point and smart edge. Point to point is pretty obvious Freehand enable you to work your way around an image but you have to be very accurate But for complex images the smart edge works out where the edge of the image is as you move around it and click periodically. If you don't like it's selection you can go back by pressing delete. A good tip is to enlarge the image so you can select the points better When you have been all the way around, you must end up where you started , right click. You will then see that the image is seperated. You should now just to do a copy and paste as a new image. After that you can modify the image e.g resize and save. When you are happy with it you can copy it and paste onto your background as a new layer. Hope that covers it, have mess around with some cutting out and let me know if you need any points clarifying. I'm still on a learning curve myself. Best of Luck
