Matt Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 I don't know much about computers/laptops, only the basics anyway. I'm looking for a laptop at the moment, basically I don't do much work on it I just want it for internet, DVD, music, games (Not neceserrily games...but if I could play Football Manager on it that would be good) so I don't want to be paying to much, I have seen this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw...gory_oid=-27751 for £395.99 so can anyone tell me is that a good offer? or does anyone know of any other better offers about? I would go for a second hand one, I know somone who sells second hand ones but I spent £300 on a second hand on in the past and it broke within 6-10 months and the repair cost was stupid so I wasted £300 which really I could have bought a new one at that price so want to keep clear of second hand ones if I can.
JadeFalcon Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 my advice ... dont get a laptop unless you really need one for work on the go as they are fragile things, i am forever repairing busted laptops ( hello pete if your reading this ) drop it and the screen will go ... pull the psu cable around too much and the power jack goes go for a desktop unless you really really really need a laptop

I would get a desktop computer as generally they are much better for watching dvds and playing games. They tend to have more RAM and a better processor speed.

JadeFalcon Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 also if you have a nice big LCD / plasma tv u dont need a monitor just hook the desktop into that £400 can buy u a pretty decent desktop ... albeit the graphics wont be up to much for big gaming needs but you can always add a nice big graphics card at a later date ... just make sure when you buy one that it has the slot to upgrade it at a later date, that is if you intend to upgrade it... the graphics card can be the defining part of a pc ... my old pentium 4 1.7gig with ti4600/ati 9800 pro (old cards now) still kicks the crap out of my m8s 3.0gig with his onboard standard gfx card

Matt - If you're not in a desperate hurry I'm back to work on Tuesday so I can then find out and give you an overview of the best notebooks in the £400 range from PC World - I think free upgrade to Windows Vista should also be a consideration

Not in a any major hurry, I've been without a laptop for a few months now so a few days won't matter!
MC Prussian Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 I bought an Acer Aspire 5101AWLMi recently and am really happy with it: - AMD Turion 64 with 2 GHz - 15'4'' TFT LCD screen - ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 Graphic Card - 100 GB Harddrive - DVD-ROM (double layer for DVD+R and DVF +/-RW) - 1 GB cache - 802.11b/g wireless LAN included - Camera included!! (Top of the screen, no additional purchase necessary!) And all that for less than 500 pounds.
cisono Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 I've got two laptops (from work) but end up using just the desktops, unless I am travelling (or testing something)... plus desktops are cheaper (to build and fix if any problems arise).
Ajax Treesdown Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 I've got a Sony Vaio, had it for two years. No problems with it and it has been brilliant. Cost me £600. You pay for quality.

Ajax Treesdown Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 You pay for having Vaio written on it Yes, thats right and i'm f*****g cool!
cisono Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 You pay for having Vaio written on it And for the smaller size? I quite fancy a Vaio myself...
Deathside Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 And for the smaller size? I quite fancy a Vaio myself... The Vaios are good but I consider them overpriced Right now I'm using a lightweight Philips 11" widescreen - It does the job
cisono Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 The Vaios are good but I consider them overpriced Right now I'm using a lightweight Philips 11" widescreen - It does the job They are overpriced indeed. I guess that a Philips 11" widescreen is quite cheap in places like Singapore?
Deathside Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 They are overpriced indeed. I guess that a Philips 11" widescreen is quite cheap in places like Singapore? I think this Philips retails at around £900 in UK but this particular one is a pre-production sample
lookwhaticando Posted 19 November 2006 Posted 19 November 2006 Mine's pretty small, truth be told. Seriously, it's just 12 inches. I wouldn't recommend mine for the budget concious buyer. If you wanted to spend a lot, I'd recommend it for sure, it gets very heavy use (it's my main computer) and it's taken it very well over the last 5 months. I was wise and spent money on the complete care warranty, which covers me for accidental damage (should I happen to drop it, being the clumsy twat that I am) as well as the usual parts failures etc. Next business day, on-site service too. Not that I've had to use the service yet - I have on previous laptops and found it to be well worth the initial outlay.
cisono Posted 20 November 2006 Posted 20 November 2006 I think this Philips retails at around £900 in UK but this particular one is a pre-production sample What is the exact model number then? (Unless yours has either no model number or never made it to production )
Deathside Posted 20 November 2006 Posted 20 November 2006 What is the exact model number then? (Unless yours has either no model number or never made it to production ) Not 100% sure, but I think this one became the Philips-freevents X63

cisono Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 Matt - You have a PM Can I have a laptop instead?
Deathside Posted 22 November 2006 Posted 22 November 2006 Can I have a laptop instead? You've already got two!
