Head Honcho Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 My Brother in Law to be has been a Special Constable for the past year and a half. He's trying to join the regulars and has passed all his written and verbal tests. Last month he went for his final test(role play). This is where they get real actors to simulate potential situations that a police officer may encounter. My Brother in Law to be found out yesterday that he was unsuccessful and this was the reason given " You did not show enough empathy towards the Black actors" What a fvcking joke! So much for treating everybody the same

So much for treating everybody the same There must be some sort of re-test, or dispute procedure to allow you bro in law to be re-assest etc!!! I find the reason quite unusual but are the requirements(empathy) towards blacks more sensitive then whites, and if it's not (i'm not calling anybody a racist\bigot), did your bro inlaw show more empathy towards white actors?????????? But I agree it is overall a daft reason, if it's the only reason, not to be made an officer!!!

You may be right, there may be other reasons he wasn't successful, but for them even to mention this reason strikes me as strange, but then nothing suprises me these days where the police are concerned. I'll take a look at the letter tomorrow (when he's not looking ) see if there were any other reasons

Head Honcho Posted 1 December 2006 Author Posted 1 December 2006 A lad I know had an application rejected becuase they needed more black people in the workforce. What a piss take. I can understand this reason up to a point. Where it gets a bit stupid is when places like The Highlands have been told they have to have the same racial make up in their force as they do in London.

Positive descrimination is still descrimination......believe me, the ethnic minorities did not ask for it or want it!!! The government makes these decisions and i'm afraid society has to live with the consequences, and the 'good work' the government are trying to do, acrtually causes divides between the minorities and majorities!!
lookwhaticando Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 Ridiculous. Yet, at the same time, we have officers who totally refuse to serve a certain type of people. Clearly there's no double standards here.
Janx Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 MORE PC BOLLOCKS!!! (see what I did there) But POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS KILLING THIS COUNTRY
lookwhaticando Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 MORE PC BOLLOCKS!!! (see what I did there) But POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS KILLING THIS COUNTRY Bravo! Yes, PC is getting out of hand.
Lord Nibblington Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 MORE PC BOLLOCKS!!! (see what I did there) It deserved its own little drum roll afterwards!
cisono Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 MORE PC BOLLOCKS!!! (see what I did there) But POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS KILLING THIS COUNTRY Totally agree. These kind of stories have me fuming...
Lemon Harpic Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 Oh my God! A police officer was expected to show empathy to all ethnic minorities, including niggers! Shock! Horror! THIS IS THE END OF CIVILISATION!!! How hard can it be for Allen's brother-in-law to find an institutionally racist police force to join? The Metropolitan and Greater Manchester Police spring to mind. I'm sure they won't require him to treat darkies like real people.

Surely the whole point of any anti-racism campaign is to promote equality
Lemon Harpic Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 ...........but why should you have to show empathy to any race? Huh? You have to show empathy to all people. Even those with brown skin. Your brother-in-law was incapable of doing this, and didn't get the job. No biggie, though. Like I said there are plenty of police forces that will welcome him with open arms.
lookwhaticando Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 The SPG treated all minorities equally - it showed no empathy towards any of them. It sounds bollocks to me... he didn't show empathy towards a certain race? What's that all about, really? There's a difference between racism and showing empathy. As far as I care, so long as he carries out his job to the best of his abilities without demonstrating clear prejudices, then what's the problem? If he ignored minorities completely or doesn't deal with them effectively at all, then perhaps there's a case of racism. In which case, that officer who refused to serve Jewish/Israeli people should be booted out for being racist too.
Daggers Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 ...........but why should you have to show empathy to any race? Surely the whole point of any anti-racism campaign is to promote equality Empathy is a "good thing". Identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives. Police officers need to be empathetic.
lookwhaticando Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 Empathy is a good thing, of course, but isn't it a bit too subjective to be part of a final test on the path to joining the force? What did he do? Look at the guy funny?

Head Honcho Posted 1 December 2006 Author Posted 1 December 2006 Empathy is a "good thing". Identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives. Police officers need to be empathetic. I agree. But you don't choose what level of empathy to use based on colour!
Rincewind Posted 1 December 2006 Posted 1 December 2006 If you were a special PC and called out to a situation between a white and black guy and each said the other started it. The black guy was holding a baseball bat. Who would you believe? I'll give you my answer in the morning. PS I had to do empathy for my SIA training.
