Chandler Posted 16 January 2005 Posted 16 January 2005 Levein has just completed his 12th Championship game in charge at City giving us an opportunity to compare his record with Adams'. And would you Adam & Eve it their records are virtually identical! Each managed a princely 16 points from 12 matches. And the goal difference is the same too (+1 - Adams 13-12, Levein 12-11). But, and this is a humongous BUT, whereas Adams' managed a steady 11 points from his last 6 matches Levein has only managed 5 (mirroring Adam's poor start). In short folks, Levein is deteriorating. If we carry on our current trajectory we are set for a final points tally of 51. Projecting from the current tally of Gillingham it is probable that the team in the highest relegation slot may finish with a total of 48 points. This makes our next game possibly our DEFINING match of the season as we are at home to Gillingham, exactly the type of side that we have struggled against of late. If we throw this one there is absolutely no doubt we are set for a vicious relegation dog fight. Not one of YOU ever considered this scenario one dark morning last October. But I did...

Scarby Posted 16 January 2005 Posted 16 January 2005 MON also had a bad start, look what happened then! and i think you will find Mr. Chandler that as a football fan every one here always thinks of the worst scenario.

The way I work it out... 16 points in 12 games = 1.33r points per game. 1.33r x remaining games of the season (18) = 24 points 24 + our current tally (36) = 60 points A midtable position. Of course I only did GCSE Maths

breadandcheese Posted 16 January 2005 Posted 16 January 2005 Chandler, I have a genuine question for you. I am a supporter of Levein, think he is a good manager and do prefer him to Adams. I do think the comparison of Adam's results managing his own team to Levein results managing Adam's team is a little unfair, but that's me getting off the subject. This season, is in my opinion a write-off and hope that we use the remainder of it to stabilise our club and build a base for a promotion push next season. My question, is do you think we are doing this, and what do you think our prospects are for next season under Levein? I ask this question because I am genuinely interested in your response, and not looking for a way to have a go, or argue at your every point. Thanks
Hoof Fox Posted 16 January 2005 Posted 16 January 2005 Chandler may I just remind you of some subtle differences, whilst you compare Micky and Craig's records : 1) Micky was able to sign a whole host of players and therefore field his "own team", whilst Craig has signed 1 player on loan and 2 players on permanent deals, and they only signed last week. Lets compare CL against MA when the new manager has fielded his own team for 12 matches and not somebody else's, look how different we were under MON once he was able to bring his own players in. 2) Micky had a full pre season to work with these players, to organise formations and team patterns, CL has not had the benefit to do this and therefore has had to work in between matches on making subtle changes but whilst also trying to prepare for what has been a pretty hectic schedule, again an unfair comparison. 3) Micky had 2 full seasons as well to shape and mould this club and whilst it cannot be argued that he did a very good job in the first season, and did ok against the odds last season, he made some big mistakes this season and by the time CL took over the players seemed to have lost belief in themselves and already looked resigned to mid table mediocrity, whilst results have not improved greatly there does appear to be an improvement in team spirit and we do appear to be more difficult to beat and given time we will improve under CL has he continues to dismantle a squad which has proved to be poor, a squad MA built not CL. Chandler please judge CL when he has been able to build his own squad, and has had the time to instill his tactics and beliefs onto the players, he has no magic wand and it is going to take time and paitence to get us back on the right track, but from the interviews CL has given and the players he has bought in and the one's he is trying to offload he seems to be getting it right ...slowly, but realise he is working with a very small budget and with players he is finding difficult to sell on. I believe we have a manager of tremendous potential who will help build this club back up, and he has the right qualities and ideas to not only take us back up but to keep us their and also build some long term foundations. Stop being so negative.

I ask this question because I am genuinely interested in your response, and not looking for a way to have a go, or argue at your every point. Thanks 55374[/snapback] No, the current situation is anything but stable. When you describe the season as a 'write-off' I get the strong impression you are suggesting a mid-table finish. At the moment this is a probability, but not a particularly strong one. However you ever considered 'write-off' in a less euphemistic way? How about it suggesting more a relegation scrap, if not relegation itself? The scrap will be well and truly on if we lose to Gillingham on Saturday. Outright relegation then must therefore be considered a possibility, if not a particularly strong one I do not accept the view that Levein can be let of the hook because his squad is not his own. Adams won us promotion with a squad that was largely inherited and was considerably inferior to this one, had the guts ripped out of it before the season commenced and was only sparsely supplemented with loanees for the duration. As for Levein, I am yet to be persuaded...
TrickyTrev Posted 16 January 2005 Posted 16 January 2005 largely inherited and was considerably inferior to this one This is complete and utter bollcks. Adams had a strong Goal Keeper who was by far the way the ebst in the League in Ian Walker. He had the best player in the league by a country mile not to mention a premiership class forward in Paul Dickov. It was still a fantastic achievement but the first team he inherited was very strong and the best ion the division, wee just had a very small squad. This years squad is nothing in comparison. We have nothing players upfront and the central midfield is one of the weakest in the division. Players like Nalis and Gujohnsson are a long way off promotion standard never mind a certain Muzzy Izzet's standards. I suggest we give Levein a change to get his own players in before we judge, just like we ddin't know what Adams was really like until he was given the change to buy players and build his own team.

How would you feel if CL was left to build his own squad IN THE FIRST DIVISION? It really is time to wake up and smell the Cranberries. The Jolly Roger of bad ship relegation has been spotted on the horizon. You can BELIEVE all you like, for as long as you like, about 'potential', after all this word is simply a euphemism for someone who promises to do something but who hasn't delivered yet. And please tell me this, lets talk in pounds and ounces, what exactly are Levein's qualities and ideas? I really wanna know. Now, give me a broadside of your finest grape shot. Har! Har!

In fact others have speculated here whether Walker should be given the nod over Taylor when he is fit. Without wishing to do run the keeper down, Walker was guilty of several lapses that season that cost us points. The flap at Forest, the free kick at home to Preston and Mark River's daisy cutter to name but a few. There's no argument against Muzzy. But you might recall he missed large chunks of the season through injury. We still ground out results without him. Dickov had a wonderful year and was the main reason why we were promoted. But remember when we got Connolly? Wasn't he supposed to be the ideal like-for-like replacement? Don't you remember that? And how we were then made favourites for the bounce back? And that's all you can mention. Just three. What about the lesser lights eh? Elliott (who can't get a look in now), one of the boo boys favourites who nevertheless marshalled the defence superbly? Or 'Doorman' Frank who could stop a ten ton truck but couldn't pass to save his life? Or how about the absolute dross. Impey and ROGERS to name but two (both trying to take Forest down). Your namesake featured in far too many. Then we were so greatful for 'pay as you play' NICKY SUMMERBUG (forgotten him haven't you) And then, last and very much least the simply unmentionable very junior 'cult hero.' (I know he didn't play that much but just thought I'd remind you about the general standard of our strength in depth) I could go on...but there's no need because you tie yourself up in knots. If this squad was so good why did Adams have to release so many of them? And who was pressing him to do this? Could it have been us? Why? Because we knew how limited the squad was? It was awful to watch - but it did the business. It was indeed a limited squad, a real piglet's ear of one. But we had a manager then who managed to make a rather large silk purse out of it. And now we have an alchemist who's learning how to turn gold into base metal...
