Shum Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 Come on then, what do you think the squad should be.... I would go for... Vaughan (capt),Loye, Joyce, Bell, Pietersen, Strauss, Collingwood, Flintoff, Nixon, Dalrymple, Plunkett, Anderson, Mahmood, Bopara and Panesar. I say stick with the men that done the job in Aus.

I would go with that apart from i would add broady for bopara. Just because we could get another leicestershire man in.
surrifox Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 Just announced - Lewis in and Loye out. Bopara is included

No real surprises, slightly disappointing to see Loye missing out.
Simi Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 Well done to Nixon  Surprised at Loye not been included opening partnership needs some power really I think.

Shum Posted 14 February 2007 Author Posted 14 February 2007 P 20 D3 W 5 L 12 you know what I mean... That done the job in the OD series in the last few weeks. As a Leicestershire fan, it would have been nice to Broad included but he didn't really play much over the winter so it's understandable. Surprised Loye missed out - those slog sizes in the small grounds out there would have been brill.

I wasn't too sure about Nixon as I think there are stronger batting alternatives but he's done OK, is clearly popular and is generally only getting to the crease with an over or two to the close. Fletcher ballsed up the whole WK/Batter slot with his stubborn endorsement of Jones and his unconscionable treatment of Read plus his early rejection of Foster, Prior and Davis
Nationwider Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 I wouldn't have bothered with Vaughan. We've managed to win a few without him - instead we're going to have a "will he-won't he" saga until he breaks down after 6 overs in the field against New Zealand. Like Hussain, it's not like he's a world class one-day batsman either. Strauss could captain, IMO. I'm glad to see Bopara's in, but disappointed that Loye didn't make it. I think if you polled a hundred county players, most would choose Broad ahead of Mahmood as well. His run-rate in 20/20 was <5.00 FFS, which is almost unbeliveable... With the pitches likely to be super-slow, Bopara's medium-pace wobblers I fancy more than Dalrymple's non-spinning spin. My team vs New Zealand would be: Joyce Strauss © Pietersen Bell Collingwood Flintoff Bopara Nixon (w) Lewis Anderson Panesar
Sods Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 I would go with this but one change My team vs New Zealand would be: Joyce Strauss © Pietersen Bell Collingwood Flintoff Bopara Nixon (w) Lewis Plunkett Anderson Panesar
Flynny Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 If you've got Colly and Bopara in, why would you want Lewis bowling too? Stick another batsman in or go for another paceman.
Nationwider Posted 16 February 2007 Posted 16 February 2007 Both valid comments. I don't like the idea of going into the tourny with two crocked quicks (Anderson and Lewis) - Anderson has by far the best wickets:games ratio of any bowler, so I'll take Plunkett over Lewis, based on his current form. Mahmood's getting better, but he's still too expensive at the moment. It's a pity we haven't got another batsman in the Loye/Pietersen mould in the XV. We've only got AF and KP that can consistently clear the boundary - 'Banger' Trescothick would have made a huge difference to the balance (and quality) of the line-up, had he been in any sort of frame of mind to play. I hope they've not missed a trick by leaving Loye at home.

Geo V Posted 16 February 2007 Posted 16 February 2007 Im gutted that we didnt take Broad with us as the hungry newcomer and Loye who offers something different and may have been more succesful in the world cup format on smaller grounds and against lesser bowlers. As for what we have, Vaughan will start and I hope they drop Strauss who is woefully out of form and others have impressed. From those selected, I`d start with... JOYCE VAUGHAN (can also bowl on pitches that are expecting to be slow) BELL PIETERSEN (can bowl) COLLINGWOOD (can bowl) FLINTOFF DARLYMPLE (can bowl) NIXON PLUNKETT (ahead of Lewis and Mahmood because he is a genuine wicket taker. I think a stat that came out is that he has taken 3 wickets or more in his last 5 ODI`s) ANDERSON PANASAAR I have a feeling the old mates brigade will kick in and they`ll drop Joyce for Strauss for the opener which would be ridiculous considering Joyces recent form. I like the balance of the side above as we have no real pont fielders, even Monty is improving and we would bat down to no9 as Plunkett can weild a bat well. Also with Vaughan and Pietersen in the side we will have upto 8 bowlers to call upon which is useful if a particular bowler or two is getting spanked around the park or if they have missread the pitch and needed a slower bowler because all the pitches are apparently new. Anyway, roll on the World Cup and well done to New Zealand for smashing the Aussies by 10 wickets this morning. They are getting worse and worse!
