Wesolowski stars in 19-0 hammering

The Qantas Young Socceroos have qualified for the semi finals of the OFC World Youth Championship qualifiers after thrashing Tonga 19-0 in Honiara today.

New Melbourne Victory signing Chris Tadrosse (pictured right) netted five goals for Ange Postecoglou’s side, with 17-year-old debutant David Williams and Empoli midfielder Frank Lagana adding four each.

Leicester City youth player James Wesolowski and Melbourne boy Billy Celeski scored two a piece, with goals to Aaron Downes and Perth Glory’s Nick Ward finishing the rout.

The win is Australia’s biggest ever at Under 20 level, eclipsing 2001’s 16-0 victory over Samoa in the Cook Islands.

Chesterfield defender Downes ignited the goal avalanche after just 41 seconds, nodding home a Tadrosse corner.

Wesolowski scored his first in seventh minute, before Lagana added his first of a first half hat trick in the 21st minute.

Celeski scored his opener a minute later, with further goals to Wesolowski and Lagana, coupled with strikes to Tadrosse (x2) and Williams, sending Australia to the break with a nine goal advantage.

The deluge continued in the second stanza, much like the typically treacherous Solomon Islands rain, with Lagana and Celeski adding further goals at the beginning of the half.

It was then the Tadrosse and Williams show in the last fifteen minutes, with Tadrosse grabbing three goals in succession within seven minutes midway and then Williams then eclipsing him with three of his own in the last five minutes.

Hyundai A-League player Nick Ward added his only goal (84th) in between his teamamtes quickfire hat-trick of goals.

“After the game was postponed yesterday, the guys switched on and did their job today,” said Postecoglou after the match.

“The whole thing is a process, we’ve got to win five games here to qualify and today was the second step of that process.”

Following yesterday’s match postponement, the fixture list for the next round of matches has been pushed forward one day.

Consequently, Australia will now play fellow Group A qualifiers Vanuatu on Thursday, January 27 at a time yet to be confirmed.

Wonder if he'll make it?

58764[/snapback]

I'd be gutted if he didn't and bewildered. Whenever i've seen him he's looked superb, but having said that he hasn't been mentioned by Levein as a top prospect. He's still only 17 and if he continues to do well for our reserves he'll get his chance I imagine.

He was hyped up when we signed him, like a certain Mr Petrescu but it looks like Wesolowski has a better attitude than Tomi does.

...deliberate tactic by Levein to keep the spotlight off young Weso.

Most of the hype surrounding our starlet actually came out of Oz. Coaches at his academy there proclaimed him the best propspect ever to come out of Australia -better even than Kewell.

If you fly 10,000 miles and leave everything behind at a very tender age that helps to keep you on the straight and narrow - that's why he hasn't gone down the route of Petrescu & Co.

The prodigy has helped to cure (temporarily) some of you lot of your obsession for moribund academy grads with a local postcode. But I must ask - why has it taken you lot so long to notice him? I was banging on about the kid 18 months ago on the other board.

Yet another example of the small town mindset? Now, what does a FOREIGNER have to do to get noticed around here eh? Some of you bigots have got a word for that which you chuck around rather liberally...

We've been well aware of his presence even 18 months ago, so what are you on about?... I don't even think this board was up 18 months ago so how can you say we haven't noticed him?... Hoof here has been regularly posting about Weso so you're a bit off this time Chandler...

I remember when we signed Weso, and the glowing reports of him, but he was what..14 at the time? A long time before he was close to first team material...

...if you bothered to read my post Shen I said THE OTHER BOARD.

For the record, some of your friends on here were banging on about a certain Finn of Hungarian descent somewhat prematurely (around the same time that the local slappers started to brush their teeth with his dick).

Haha quality!

Chandler mate, your well on your way for best phrase of the year with that.

I have been a big fan of Wesolowski for a long while, i'm not sure what other board your talking about as I doubt I posted on there. I take a keen interest in the academy and Wesolowski has been one of the most consistent players there for a long while, i've also gone out of my way to seek info on him from Australians on the net. They all rate him, but since he has came here they haven't heard that much about him. I think this is the first time Weso has been called up by Australia for a few years, so it will be nice to hear how they think he has progressed.

Do you watch the academy much dude? What do you think of Stearman and Dawson? Personally I think they are extremely promising and make some of our first team look like amatuers. Obviously i'm yet to see them have a good run against tough opposition, but after watching them over the past few years I doubt it will trouble them, especially in this shit league.

I was one to get involved in the Petrescu hype, but having said that whenever I saw him I definately saw talent. He was so arrogant though, which you sometimes get with kids who know they are quite handy.

With Wesolowski, Dawson and Stearman I think we have cause to be optimistic. These three could walk in to our team and look the part, it's just getting that breakthrough that's the hard part.

I think now we are within shooting distance of a run at the play-offs Levein will leave these guys on the back burner unless there is a real injury crisis or one of them demonstrates they are really ready in his eyes.

I would imagine they will be at the forefront of it next season, more so Dawson and Stearman.

aye but if this:

doesn't refer to the fans on this board (and the other) then I suggest you express yourself more clearly next time. The only thing you mention, is that you've been talking about him on the other board... now why would you then bother referring to them as 'you lot' on this board? You're either referring to 'us' too or you just messed up and wrote your post the wrong palce :P

Reckon we should sign David Williams from the Aus u-20. He's 16 years old, quickest player the coach has ever seen, and is a great finisher so i've been told.

Seriously!!!!! are you Wesoloski

Ummm, no, Alex, but my god i'm dazzling in the park...

Stearman, Wesolowski, Petrescu, Dodds, Graham, Dawson, O'Grady all have a great chance. Big season for O'Grady & Petrescu. We also signed a new right back called Liam Norvell who from what i've seen is looking quite impressive!

Young central midfielders would be Dawson and Wesolowski, Dodds can also play there too but he's better up front. Dawson plays very much like Roy Keane.

GK: Logan - 6

Didn't have a chance with the 3 conceded. Collected crosses well, and his ditribution was generally sound.

RB: Powell - 7

Looked solid at right back and got forward well. His crossing was a bit wayward though, but he had a good long throw which set up Wesolowski for the third goal.

CB: Smedley - 7

Good in the air and on the ball - Formed a good partnership with Stearman.

CB: Stearman - 7

Not as impressive as when he played against East bengal. Was at fault for the first goal when he attempted to chest the ball to another player outside his 18 yard box, which was picked up by a Norwich player who was able to get clear on goal - Player was fouled, and the subsequent penalty was put away. He looked very comfortable on the ball and his distribution was good. Struggled against a powerful Norwich striker who outmuscled him at times - Still needs to develop in this area, but he's only 16 so he has plenty of time for that. He tended to make runs from defence to join in the midfield/attack when he could in open play, which was encouraging to see.

LB: Sheehan - 7

Similar to Powell in so far as solid at the back and decent going forward.

RW: Pearmain - 5

Not particularly impressive. Didn't get past his man once and deliver a telling cross. When he had the ball, he demonstrated a good touch, but didn't really know what to do with it and took too long in his decision making, which would often mean him being disposessed, or giving the ball away cheaply. Struggled to track back and defend at times, and seemed uninterested without the ball. Strikes me as a cocky player in the mould of Jordan Stewart, but without the ability to justify this stance.

CM: Dawson - 9*

Man of the match by far. Was a strong influence in the centre of midfield with his limitless energy and drive. Looked excellent on the ball, and his distribution was excellent. Got forward well throughout the game, and was unlucky not to score with a 25 yard effort in the first half which flew just wide. Set up Wright's second goal when he crossed with his weaker left foot, which was headed across goal by Pacquette and tapped in by Wright from about 2 yards out. Hopefully will get a chance this season. Petrescu (poster) was right about comparing him to Roy Keane, he seems to have all those attributes.

CM: Butcher - 7

Showed some neat touches in midfield and looked composed on the ball. He was more of the holding midfield player allowing Dawson to burst forward from midfield. Didn't really have the aggressive battling qualities of Dawson, and pulled out of a few tackles.

McGavigan - 5

Read Pearmain, except for the cockiness. A left winger who couldn't get past anyone or deliver a decent cross.

FW: Wright - 6

Stunning first goal. Cut in from the right hand side and unleashed a rocket of a shot from 20 yards out on his left foot in to the top corner. Second goal was a tap in from a ball headed across goal by Pacquette. Didn't really impress me though apart from the goals. He struggled to hold up the ball as a lack of strength and phsyique meant he was pushed off far too easily. Distribution and link up play was generally poor. However, he was very committed and vocal in captaining the team. Doesn't seem first team material at the minute, although a better option than Blake.

FW: Pacquette - 5

Forget about signing him. Kept giving the ball away, and didn't make an impression. Set up Wright's second goal, but that was about it.

SUBS:

FW: O'Grady - 5

Showed a bit of pace and skill, but was largely anonymous.

LW: Wesolowski - 8

Scored the third goal with a well taken finish. Controlled a long throw in on his chest, and from about 12 yards out, volleyed it first time in to the corner of the net. Looked lively down the left and showed plenty of pace and skill.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, it was good to see some of these promising players in action. They coped extremely well with an experienced Norwich reserve side. It didn't look too promising when they fell a goal behind after just two minutes, but the team battled back well with Dawson proving a massive influence from midfield.

Here are a few pics, not very good, mind:

eh...where did this come from? And what happened to the rest of mine and Shen's running feud?

Have we been censored by Big Board Brother?

I deleted some of the feud mate, although it was entertaining I wanted to try and retain a decent thread about a player who deserves some recognition.

Hope that's alreet boss.

Wesolowski plays again tonight if he's selected, let's hope for another rout.

Should be another easy game, Vanuatu are better then the other 2 in the group but are still behind us by a fair bit. I would be suprised if Wesolowski played in this match as the coach is fully rotating the squad after each game.

Aye, Shen, every boy growing up here in the 50's and 60's was given a thorough grounding in comic book Kraut (Shnell! Shnell!! Gott In Himmell!! Achtung!! Achtung!! Raus!! Raus!!).

Probably enough to get you onto a German degree course these days!

I've got a soft spot for you Norsemen - ever since I contacted a Danish financial services group. I 'closed' your compatriot by congratualting him on your incredible win at Euro '92 and told him I was more pleased about it than he was.

'Why?' He asked.

'Because you beat the Germans!' I replied.

We laughed a lot and I made a fortune (which I promptly blew on a leggy Polish model).
