BRITAIN heaved a sigh of relief last night as sleazy soccer thug Stan Collymore revealed he is quitting the country for America.

The disgraced ex-England player — reviled after battering lover Ulrika Jonsson and “dogging” for sex in car parks — claims he is pursuing his dream to become a film star.

And he is boasting to pals that he has landed a major role in a Hollywood movie.

But he is also trying to escape his sordid past. And few Brits will be sad to see him go.

Collymore, 33, has bought an apartment in Miami’s trendy South Beach district.

And he has struck up a creepy close friendship with fellow outcast OJ Simpson, a near-neighbour in the city.

Former American football hero and Naked Gun star Simpson, 57, was cleared in court of murdering his ex-wife Nicole and her lover Ron Goldman. But he was later found guilty by a civil jury.

A showbiz source said: “Collymore can’t escape his past in Britain and enjoys America because nobody recognises him. It’s ironic he has gone to someone as hated as OJ Simpson to find friendship.”

The pair became pals after Simpson — a big fan of soccer and Collymore in particular — got talking to the ex-Liverpool striker after spotting him in Miami.

Friends say Collymore — divorced by wife Estelle after The Sun revealed his obsession with dogging — will divide his time between Miami, New York and Hollywood.

He has booked acting lessons at a Los Angeles stage school and claims he turned down a role in a top British soap to accept the movie offer.

Collymore’s agent Simon Kennedy said: “It is his intention to move to the States imminently. There is no doubt that for Stan it’s a chance for a fresh start away from his history.”

What a bunch of wankers the media are, especially the sun. What angers me more is the fact i've got a copy on my desk now. I read it, but I shouldn't. Collymore is mis-understood, i'd be happy with him running this country more than Tony Blair.

Good luck Stan, i'll never forget the brief memories you gave me of the 5-2 drubbing and the 'beckham' celebration after a ripper you scored against Leeds.

No he's not really a role model, but Collymore gets a lot of unjust abuse from the media. Fair enough he's made some horrible mistakes and he admits that, the one shocking thing though is the way the media treat him. There are plenty of the male population who have done things that Collymore has done and they don't get half the flack he does.

Jim Davidson, Ally McCoist, Gazza, George Best and plenty of other famous people have hit women and have hit them on more than one occasion. Do they get constant reminders from the media about it? The answer is no, Gazza and a few others are still treated as demi-gods in the newspapers and an english darling. Yet they have done far worse than Collymore has. Collymore hit Ulrika once (which before you start is on time too many) but if you read his book and hear him talk about the incident you would see how disgusted he is with himself for doing it. Now that doesn't mean Stan is forgiven for what he did, but the media make him out to be alot worse than what he is.

As for cheating on his wife, about 30-40% of all male's do this. Now I wouldn't do that, but alot of men do and will, Mainly because they can't resist the temptation of some new clout or perhaps their relationship is shit and fancy some ram rod action for once.

His dogging revelation doesn't really help him, but again people do far worse. I personally think Stan Collymore is a legend, others would disagree and they have every right to. But Collymore is mis-understood and alot of stuff that's written about him is inconsistent.

I was in the Auld Alliamce pub in Paris '98 when he whacked Ulrika. Didn't see him do it but he took a fearful beating.

At the time I hated him as a player, but he took a load of 'playful' abuse that night, but to be honest I would have gone nuts as well if I was faced with that.
