Fryatt frustrated by foot problem

Leicester striker Matty Fryatt is hoping the summer break will resolve his long-standing foot injury.

Fryatt, a prolific scorer prior to the current campaign, has managed to find the net just four times this season.

"I haven't felt 100% since coming back from injury," Fryatt told BBC Sport. "It was a combination of toe and ankle injuries and I still don't feel right.

"I don't think I will be until I manage to rest over the summer. Next season hopefully I'll be injury free."

The 21-year-old Fryatt has been using an insole in his boots to take some of the pressure away from his ankle.

"It has slowly started to prevent the ankle swelling as well as getting the foot into the correction position.

"After the final game of the season on Sunday I'll have a six-week break and when pre-season comes I'll come back fresh and ready."

Before his move to Leicester last season, Fryatt had scored 30 goals in 78 games for Walsall, but for the first time in his career the goals have dried up.

"I would have liked to have said I've had 200 chances and scored 15 goals this season," said Fryatt. "But I can't remember a game when I had five chances.

"In a team that's not doing well you are not going to get as many chances as those that are successful.

"I knew there would be a point in my career when it wasn't going to be plain sailing.

"It just hasn't been my year. The important thing is to keep enjoy playing football. You don't have a given right to score.

"But I'm looking forward to getting some goals next season."

With Leicester having flirted with relegation this season, Fryatt is hoping new owner and chairman Milan Mandaric will be able to bring in new players to help the club challenge for promotion during the 2007/2008 campaign.

"We need some injection into the team if we want to get to the play-offs next season.

"Milan Mandaric's goal is the Premiership and for the fans that has to be positive.

"He had a good record with Portsmouth and next year we have to be thinking about the Premiership, but to do that I do think we need more players."

But he was unfit before his injury, instead of resting during the summer he should be concentrating on improving his mobility as well as his physical and mental agility. I'm sure ther's someone out there who can advise him for just a small portion of his take home pay.

The whole team was unfit thats why we didn't get a result until the thrid game of the season.

Yup, reinforced by how Worthington viewed the fitness situation post Norwich.

Says it all. If he hasn't been 100% why has he been playing? Yet the suggestion he should either be left out or come in off the bench for short spells was rejected out of hand and even mocked.

Yet it was obvious he simply wasn't sharp.

He'll need that rest he mentions because if he's not careful that foot problem will trouble him long term.

Meanwhile, we need some strikers.

What happened to Elvis being our super-striker? Or a certain Louis Dodds being more than capable of performing? If you believe everything you hear, we're getting De Vries back, and we'll also be joined by Todorov and Fowler in the summer - meaning we'll have 3 extra strikers. My my I'm excited.

a) Hammond: Not a striker. Useful coming off the bench cos his speed and strength unsettles defenders. Even with his limitations merited far more starts this season due to Horsfield's hopelessness and Fryatt being unfit - as confirmed by himself.

b) Dodds: Similarly, was a better bet than Horsfield/Fryatt and even Hammond in many ways because he's a specialist striker. I've said nothing about how he might compete against better strikers. He'll likely join Rochdale I would think.

c) DeVries: Will be like a train calling at Narborough. It will be a brief stop before moving on.

d) Todorov & Fowler: We'll see. But if they arrive don't expect me to champion Dodds for a starting place if he's still here. But a place on the bench? Maybe.
