They take your number plate and then a few miles later take it again and they measure your average speed between the two. So this means its no good just slowing down when you see the cameras anymore. How long have these been around? why not try getting identical number plates for two different cars, and try to work it so that the front car puts the identical plate on between the cameras and the second car passes by the camera as the first one is passing by the 2nd so it would appear that the car was travelling at the speed of light .

They have been around for about a month now - I have seen these alot on the M25, the M8 and other places around the country. I actually think they are a great idea, as slowing for Gatso's is dangerous and the 'ripple' effect on traffic behind you can cause heavy traffic to slow a lot. Don't the police get let off? Yes, but I am an ex-copper. And as my licence will tell you, that doesn't count for diddly squat!

I heard even the insurance companies don't charge extra for basic speeding points anymore - cos there's hardly anyone with a clean licence left.

Haven't been that way for several weeks and hadn't realised they were there... plus, I could really do without any more points for a while. Wils / Suffolk Fox / anyone else who knows - 'around Cambridge' is a bit too vague for my liking... can you be more specific?

Mind you at peak times I'd be astonished if anyone got close to the speed limit along there - let alone an 'illegal' average speed for any distance . Not to say I wouldn't have got done at quieter times though.
