Action against the Mirror

Recommended Posts

Note the highlighted text - the events portrayed were completed false.

And what did the Mirror write?

The highlighted text above were the events "portrayed" by the Mirror - which are all completely true. Allen "helped" save Clive Clarke's life, as did others - it doesn't say Allen single-handedly saved Clarke's life on his own, or even that Allen saved Clarke's life - helping to save somebody's life could mean lots of things - calling the nearest paramedic, calling the ambulance etc. And nobody really knows if Allen did or did not "attempt" mouth-to-mouth - Mandaric may not even know if this occurred if he wasn't in the changing rooms.

As for the other events I have highlighted - they all appear to be true too:

- Clarke's heart stopped beating twice

- A defibrillator was used

- Clarke is now stable

- Mandaric and Allen had a series of rows

- We were losing 1-0

So much for the events portrayed by the Mirror being completely false, eh Milan?

What?

The article clearly states that MA helped save Clarkes life by giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. This has been proved untrue, eye witnesses stated that it was in fact Dave Rennie who performed the mouth-to-mouth.

How can you even question that?

obviously not all of the bits you highlighted but the specific bit around MA giving mouth to mouth, that is what you highlighted and that is the bit that MM has pointed out as a contensous issue as it is not true

They may be true or not but it's hardly a matter for suing and from MM's statement is not the reason anyway. His reason is that the Mirror has linked the two events of Clarke and the 'sacking' which he believes makes him and the club appear callous and uncaring.

I believe there would be no legal action, with or without inaccuracies if the two stories had been reported separately.

I doubt the case will ever reach court.

But the purpose of the legal action is to deter the rest of the media from publishing ANYTHING that might portray our chairman in a less than favourable light.

Other chairmen, most notably Ken Bates and the late Robert Maxwell have tried similar stunts in the past.

By doing so, they have usually dug themselves into an even deeper hole.

Mandaric seems unable to form any sense of perspective on what's gone on this week. The person most harmed is neither himself nor Allen, but Clive Clarke.

This player, after only a fortnight at our club, now finds himself with a long battle to rebuild his life, before even he can think about resuming his career.

The chairman should pause to reflect on this, and in future perhaps engage his brain a little more, and his mouth a little less.

The aim of the legal action is more likely to force the Mirror into publishing an apology and, as you say, to deter the media from manipulating and misrepresenting the Clarke incident in order to put a negative spin on MA's departure.

If this allows Clarke's incident and MA's departure to be reported on seperately and in a more factual manner then then can only be good. Right?

Now you're doing exactly what the Mirror were guilty of... using the Clarke incident for your own agenda.

You should be ashamed of yourself.
